My external scsi port works to an MSA 500, but not to an Ultrium 1/8. Is this normal. I read another post that the external VHDCI is only for an MSA device. Is this correct?

Solution
This port is not recommended for a tape drive - for all Ultrium drives you will find following info on HP web pages:
"The HP ProLiant DL380 G4 does not have a suitable integrated SCSI controller for connecting the HP StorageWorks Ultrium. Please use one of the following compatible HBAs:
374654-B21 - Single channel Ultra320 SCSI HBA G2
268351-B21 - Dual channel Ultra320 SCSI HBA (Retired)
284688-B21 - Dual channel Ultra3 SCSI HBA (Retired)*
Rgds.
