DL380 CPU Fan Failure
Long shot but wondering if anyone has any relevant thoughts:
we have a DL380 G3 which has just had its Care Pack expire about 2 months ago. Last week, it reported a failure of CPU Fan 1. We keep a spare chassis so we replaced the failed fan with a spare (which we knew was OK)
The server behaved very oddly, it did not start the new fan and reported a cooling issue and promptly shut the server down. Rebooting the server from completely cold didn't help, so we swapped the new CPU1 fan with the working CPU2 fan and the server booted and stayed up.
Our problem is that the fan in the CPU1 position (previously the CPU2 fan) is not spinning. The new fan which was breifly in the CPU1 fan position is now running fine in the CPU2 position.
So we're a litte confused. The CPU1 fan (which is known to be good) is not spinning but the Insight Agents think it is ok and so the server is running. We can see the blades are not spinning but the LED is lit green.
We're toying with swapping the chassis over but, since this is a big job which will cause significant downtime of a few hours, we'd be keen for any one's thoughts here before we commit to coming in in the middle of the night!
Many thanks

Re: DL380 CPU Fan Failure
hi Matt
mmm interesting so CPU1 is not spinning when it was in CPU2 position
I would say:
- try clear NVRAM with 2 CPU FAN and with only one
- update system ROM in case it's not the latest
regards
