Hi folks
Like others, I am having problems upgrading my DL380's RAM. I know there's documentation out there, but if I'm honest, I just don't understand it enough to solve my problem.
Currently I have 4 x 8GB dimms (1RX4 PC4-2133P-RC0-10) in all the white slots for both processors, and then 2 x 8GB dimms in the E+F black slots, giving us a total of 96GB over 12 dimms.
I have now bought 2 x 32GB dimms (728629-B21 - HPE 32GB (1x32GB) Dual Rank x4 DDR4-2133). I have tried adding these two dimms in the blue slot #10 on each processor, in blue slot #7 and black slot #2, but all give me misconfiguration errors.
Any ideas on where / if I can fit these dimms?
Thanks so much in advance,
Lee

Re: DL380 Gen9 RAM Upgrade Issues
Hello,
The Letters identify the population order. You must follow the population order when placing the DIMMs.
- White DIMM slots denote the first slot of a channel. For 1 DPC (DIMM per channel) populate white slots only.
- A minimum of one DIMM is required per server.
- Install DIMMs only if the corresponding processor is installed.
- If only one processor is installed in a two processor system, only half of the DIMM slots are available.
- To maximize performance, it is recommended to balance the total memory capacity between all installed processors and to load the channels similarly whenever possible.
- When two processors are installed, balance the DIMMs across the two processors.
- Populate DIMMs from heaviest load (quad-rank) to lightest load (single-rank) within a channel.Heaviest load (DIMM with most ranks) within a channel goes furthest from the processor.

Populate in Alphabetical Order, (Black G & H).
And put the new Dual Rank in the first Slot A & B.

Hi Cali
Sorry, I don't understand your reply.. The existing DIMMS have been added across the two processors in alphabetical order:
A (white /ch1) = 8gb
B (white /ch2) = 8gb
C (white /ch3) = 8gb
D (white /ch4) = 8gb
Plus:
E (black /ch1) = 8gb
F (black /ch2) = 8gb
So at this point, I have more than 1 dimm per channel (white+black).
So are you saying I should leave the above in place but add the 32gb dimm to G on both processors? I think I tried this but it got rejected. I should say again that I only have two 32gb dimms, so could not populate G & H on both CPUs unless I purchased more RAM or only added to one CPU.
Thanks for your help,
Lee

SolutionOK, now it's a bit clearer.
- You have to populate in Alphabetical Order.
So the next free is G
- Populate DIMMs from heaviest load (quad-rank) to lightest load (single-rank) within a channel. Heaviest load (DIMM with most ranks) within a channel goes furthest from the processor.
For me, this means, that the new 32GB Dual Rank, has to be in Slot A, B, or C.
So, I would swap C with G.

Ah, ok, now I think I understand. Sometimes it takes a bit of time and explanation to understand the manual! I will do what you suggest, re-ordering the third channel to weight it differently and see if that helps. Unfortunately this is our main hypervisor machine so can't try until late on Friday.
Cheers Cali
