DL380 won't power on after second cpu added and cpu power module.

I notice a red light inside the box when I turn it on. When I take out the power module and cpu the box is fine.

Hello Brett,
What's the serial No of the Server?? Are both CPUs COMPAQ/HP??

Hello Brett,
What's the serial No of the Server?? Are both CPUs COMPAQ/HP?? What is the firmware version of your server>?? You may need to upgrade that to the latest one. Which you can do from the following Link:

http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/index.html

Just make sure that you pick the right one from Model or Processor.

Re: DL380 won't power on after second cpu added and cpu power module.

It's possible you can resolve this by reseating the processor (even though the socketed ones are more difficult to have loose). Is the red led next to the processor or the ppm?
The truth is out there, but I forgot the URL..

Re: DL380 won't power on after second cpu added and cpu power module.

I'd like to add a "me too" to this topic. I bought the VRM from Compaq/HP and added the 2nd CPU (not a Compaq part...Intel OEM) of the same speed/fsb/cache. The system is powering off at CPU initialization (after Memory initialization). It then powers itself back on and trys again...and again....
Tried two different 2nd CPU's (identical CPU's, identical results). Moved the "foreign CPU to slot 1 (removed Compaq CPU)...same behavior. Suggestions? I have two identical (non compaq) CPU's, haven't tried them together, but don't expect it will work.

and a PS: I have a 1st generation DL380 (P3-733)

Re: DL380 won't power on after second cpu added and cpu power module.

Hello Scott,
The original Compaq/HP are designed to withstand the thermal issues in our Servers. Therefore, I would recommend using the proprietory components because when you order the CPUs they come as a Kit which could prevent the Server from having thermal issue. I am sure that's what you'r encountering.

Re: DL380 won't power on after second cpu added and cpu power module.

You are indeed correct about the thermal issue. The 3rd party thermal solution was junk. I got an Intel heatsink from a junk P3 CPU laying around the lab and that has fixed the problem.

Thanks for your help

Re: DL380 won't power on after second cpu added and cpu power module.

Hi Sunil,

The serial number is H046FD519097.

Both the CPU and CPU power module where purchased from Harris Technology in Sydney and both where delivered in HP/Compaq packaging so I think they are the proprietory parts.

They look exactly like the same parts in the server currently.

Do you know what the red light that comes on when I add the second cpu is?

I downloaded the lastest System ROM for the DL380 and applied before adding the second cpu.

Re: DL380 won't power on after second cpu added and cpu power module.

Just to follow up again, do I need to change any jumpers.

A few other messages in this forum mention SW1 Jumper No 2 to the on position.

???

No jumpers to change.

I just added a processor to mine a few weeks ago and it powered up just fine.

I am running W2K server, it recognized the additional processor and added it to the hardware list.

Re: DL380 won't power on after second cpu added and cpu power module.

switch 2 is the configuration lock and should be off (default) If you have a red led on system board after processor upgrade then you may have a problem with that processor - maybe the stepping levels are too far apart - compaq recomends n+1

I'd suggest using a single processor and upgrade the bios before you try again also

Re: DL380 won't power on after second cpu added and cpu power module.

This is probably a silly question but how do you check the stepping of the CPU before it is plugged in.

866/256/133/1.65 is written on the CPU and I have checked those settings with Intel and the stepping settings are cA2, cB0.

How do I know what the stepping is for the CPU, is it written on the cpu somewhere?

Re: DL380 won't power on after second cpu added and cpu power module.

Hello Brett,
Here is the explanation of LEDs which are located near the CPU area on the System Bd:
Item Status Condition
1 Green = Power To System
OFF = System in Standby or OFF
System Power Good
2 RED = Processor 1 Internal Error
OFF = Normal
IEFF1
3 RED = Processor 1 Internal Error
OFF = Normal
IEFF1
4 RED = Riser Card not properly seated
OFF = Normal, Riser Card properly seated.

Hello Brett,
I have attached the picture of the system board which will enable you to figure out as to which LED it is:
