DL380G5 and HP LSI Ultra 320 Scsi

Hi,

We have a DL380G5 installed with a SBS 2003 SP2.
We are using a HP Ultrium 3-SCSI (External LTO Ultrium 920 400/800 Gb) connected to a HP LSI Adapter Ultra320 SCSI 2000 Series(W/1020/1030)(StorPort).
The HP Ulrium has the driver 1.0.5.2 and the has firmware D22D.
The HP LSI SCSI card has the drive 1.24.4.0.

The problem is when we try to make a large Backup, the backup begin but fail sometimes after 30Gb, sometimes after 80Gb...

The tape drive has already been replaced but we have always the same problem.

Can somebody help us pleased?

Thanks very much for your help.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply :)

I've installed the StorPort update and retry 2 backups of 297Gb but I've always the same problem, one failed at 246 Gb and the second at 68 GB.

Thanks for your Help

hi do you have spare number for that LSI card I mean doing a research I cannot find something very specific to check driver and firmware for that card

only this

http://www.lsi.com/storage_home/products_home/host_bus_adapters/scsi_hbas/lsi21320r/index.html

new driver and firmware I think are available in case that is the card

Re: DL380G5 and HP LSI Ultra 320 Scsi

Hi,

the SCSI card used is the HP SC11Xe Host Bus Adapter.

HP Reference: 412911-B21

The last drivers I've found on the HP site are the 1.24.4.0 and they are installed.

Thanks for your help.

Re: DL380G5 and HP LSI Ultra 320 Scsi

Hi,

I've installed the last driver for the SCSI card on the LSI Web Site (1.26.05.00).

(The drivers on the HP Beb site are 1.24.4.0).

But I've always the same problem!

Impossible to complete the backup.

Does anyone has an idea?

Thanks for your help.

Best regards

Same problem with ML350 and LTO Ultrium. Using Backup Exec 11d.

Managed to complete backup after changing Device Configuration to this parameters:

Block Size 16K
Buffer size 32K
Buffer count 10

Unchecked Write Single Block Mode

I have Warning in Eventlog ever two minutes:

Got a new drive from HP yesterday, but same problem.

Re: DL380G5 and HP LSI Ultra 320 Scsi

Echoes my experience.

http://forums11.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=1158447

In the end, the only satisfaction I got was from mass abuse of several senior HP technicians (ask to talk to someone's manager, then ask to talk to their manager, then ask for their manager), resulting in them refunding the tape drive. More than six months after the case was logged, and without a fix, I felt it was justified. Hopefully you have better luck.

Re: DL380G5 and HP LSI Ultra 320 Scsi

Hi,

controller works for this server? not listed in the recommended parts, same with the LTO-3 Ultrium 920 "SCSI" external, only LTO-3 Ultrium 920 "SAS" external is supported

http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/12477_na/12477_na.html#Options

also, does the Ultrium works with and LSI controller?
http://h18006.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/12128_div/12128_div.html#Options
dond't thinks so, please correct me if I'm wrong

Re: DL380G5 and HP LSI Ultra 320 Scsi

Try to stop the Insight Manager Services. No more Event Id 33152 after I stopped these services, and backup completes OK.

Problem started for me after upgrade of the storport driver.

Re: DL380G5 and HP LSI Ultra 320 Scsi

Hi Juan,

On the first link you posted, the server is stated as supporting the "64-Bit/133-MHz Single Channel Ultra320 SCSI HBA G2" controller.

On the tape drive page you linked, it clearly states that the drive supports "64-Bit/133-MHz Single Channel Ultra320 SCSI HBA G2".

This IS the LSI SCSI card that the original poster is using - HP just name it this way to avoid the OEM rebadging being so obvious.

As far as I can see, the server is clearly listed as supporting this controller, as is the tape drive.

I can see "HP StorageWorks 1U SCSI Rack-mount kit with one LTO-3 Ultrium 920" listed on the server specs, stating as clearly as I can see, that the drive, controller and tape drive are all fully built to support each other.

Re: DL380G5 and HP LSI Ultra 320 Scsi

I have had exactly this issue after installing the storport hotfix from Microsoft (as well as bringing the storage controller driver etc up to date). I took the advice of a previous reply and stopped all of the HP Insight services and ran my backup successfully for the first time in over three weeks. I have a case number open with HP about this issue so I will bring it to their attention and see what they say.

Hi all.

Any new informations about this problem ?
Will they make an update of the Insight agents to make them compatibles with this harware ?

Otherwise, I will wait and see.

Thanks.

Re: DL380G5 and HP LSI Ultra 320 Scsi

We have nearly got a solution from HP! We have closed the call with HP but there isn't a total resolution. In the end we had to reinstall the HP Systems Management Homepage software and upgrade the HP Insight Agents to the latest version. In the Control Panel on the server, there is an item for HP Management Agents. We have had to leave 'SCSI Information' as an Inactive agent - this was the one causing the issue with the backup (when Active, the backup fails with the Hardware Error). HP have advised that they don't have a resolution for this at the moment and that we must wait for another update to the HP Insight Agents.

Hope this helps.

Re: DL380G5 and HP LSI Ultra 320 Scsi

I set the 'SCSI Information' as an Inactive agent, but the error still happened. It was only when I disabled the HP Insight services in Windows that the SCSI error stopped.
That's not a satisfactory workaround because it means I can't monitor the server hardware. Can anyone offer any suggestions? Thanks.

Re: DL380G5 and HP LSI Ultra 320 Scsi

I too am having this problem - Support ticket has been logged, but the only progress that seems to be happening is I'm being asked the same questions over and over. Apparently my ticket has been escalated to the 'backline' people, but I'm not holding my breath.

It sounds like a very specific problem with the HP SC11Xe Host Bus Controller and the HP Management Agents.

For me disabling the agents does the trick (putting the SCSI Information doesn├в t help for me).

What I have done is to create 2 batch files - One to stop the HP Management agents and the other to start and schedule the services to be stopped prior to the tape backups and then starting after the backups have finished.

Very frustrating though ├в I am a massive HP fan, but their support on this problem for me has been quite disappointing.

Re: DL380G5 and HP LSI Ultra 320 Scsi

Sorry about my english - I have the same problem and I solved it by deinstalling the

- HP Insight Management WBEM Providers for Windows Servers

We have to identicall Systems - ML350 G5 / Ultrium 920. One worked and the other did not. So I checked the difference and it is the WBEM Provider for Windows. So I uninstalled it and now the system does the trick.

Configuration ML350G5 / SC11Xe - HP LSI-U320 / Ultrium 920 / Symantec Backup Exec 12.5/Windows Server 2008-64Bit

Kind regards

Re: DL380G5 and HP LSI Ultra 320 Scsi

I've got exactly the same problem, with basically the same hardware:

Configuration ML350G5 / SC11Xe - HP LSI-U320 / Ultrium 920 / Symantec Backup Exec 12.5/Windows Server SBS2008-64Bit

I get an error in Backup Exec about an unknown error which Symantec blame on HP and LSI basically. It has to do with thier new User Mode drivers.

I've followed the instructions in this forum about turning off the management agents. Have turned off the following:

HP Storage Agent
HP Foundation Agent

I am using PSP 8.15.

From the looks of this thread, this has been going on for a long time and this not an adequate response from any party.

Has HP suggested replacing the Scsi card to anyone? It seems that a lot of talk has gone into the Tape Drive, but it seems to be that a change in Scsi Controller maybe the easiest change.

Fingers crossed, my first backup with the change is still going..

Re: DL380G5 and HP LSI Ultra 320 Scsi

I have a DL385 G5, Ultrium 960 tape attached to LSI U320 SCSI HBA (the only device attached), PSP 8.15, Windows Server 2003 SP2 and BackupExec 11d (7170 SP3 + hot fixes).

I experienced random backup failures same as described in other posts and also BSODs every 3 or 4 days (DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL).

After reading some threads on hp and Symantec forums I suspect something related to Microsoft storport driver is wrong but updating it didn't help.

Yesterday I have replaced the storport version of LSI U320 driver with the plane SCSI driver (update driver, install from specific location), the driver is already available in the system, it only has to be selected.

The backups are fine now, no more errors, but I have to wait at least 1 week to be sure that the situation is stable.

I hope this helps.

Re: DL380G5 and HP LSI Ultra 320 Scsi

One week passed and all my backups are successful. It looks like it is a storport problem, at least in my case.

hi Mihai

I have similar issue

"Yesterday I have replaced the storport version of LSI U320 driver with the plane SCSI driver (update driver, install from specific location), the driver is already available in the system, it only has to be selected."

but I don't get what you mean by "plane SCSI driver"???

would you mind to specify how?

thanks a lot

Re: DL380G5 and HP LSI Ultra 320 Scsi

Hi Karlo,

All I did was to update driver from Device Manager: Install from a list or specific location (Advanced) -> Don't search I will choose the driver to install -> then I got a compatible hardware list and selected LSI Logic PCI-X Ultra 320 SCSI Host Adapter.

I have attached a print screen with this selection. You will notice two storport drivers, this is because I have also tryed the latest driver from LSI site.

Please see also:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms803198.aspx

Another solution might be to use the tape driver from Symantec Backup Exec + LSI storport driver but I haven't tryied this configuration.
