Expanding drive array in ML350G6 with p410i controller

A Client has an ML350G6 that was originally configured from the distributor with (1) array in RAID 0. I am trying to add additional drives to the controller to configure a second array in RAID 5. I am using HP SAS drives, however when accessing the ACU software, the new drives do not show up. When starting the server, the drive indicator lights show green (on all drives), but then change to amber on the new drives. The diagnostics report (seems to) indicate that this controller should be able to handle an additional 4 drives with regards to controller memory.

How can I tell if this P410 has the capability to handle a RAID 0 + RAID 5?

Is there a step I am missing after adding the new drives? At this point, I have only installed the drives and was expecting the new drives to show up in the ACU.

What specifications are needed to handle this configuration?

If this is a firmware limitation, can the P410 be upgraded to handle this configuration.

Thank you in advance for any guidance you can provide.

Hi,

Please check the QuickSpecs for compatible drives and configuration.
Maximum Internal Storage, page#4

Refer to ML350 G6 Server User Guide, page# 52 onwards

Re: Expanding drive array in ML350G6 with p410i controller

Hello,

Please review section Standard Features > Fault Tolerance on page 5 of the HP Smart Array P410 Controller's QuickSpecs for the supported RAID levels on the controller. RAID 0, which is a very basic level, is supported as well.

You may also refer to section Related Options > HP Hard Drives on page 12 of the above hyperlinked document for a list of supported drives by the controller. Here supported drive indicates that they have been tested on the controller. If the drive is not in this list, but a third party option, as third party options have not been tested with HPE products, it may function sub-optimally.

If it is that of listed in the above document, ensure that they are known working drives. If they are known working drives, then you need to add them to the desired RAID array to expand it and then extend  logical drive(s) as the case may be.

Ensure that the drives are connected properly and cabled correctly to the smart array controller slot on the system board.

You can create two different RAID arrays with the required number of drives and can have one RAID 0 array and separately RAID 5 array because the controller supports creating multiple RAID arrays and also multiple logical drives with a single RAID array. There are no firmware restrictions, rather firware updates provide fixes to issue that might have occured on the controller.

@TVVJ  @Suman_1978 The issue has not been resolved. The response was to review the
documentation. I had read all the referenced documents prior to posting, so
there is no resolution to the issue and it still exists.

Re: Expanding drive array in ML350G6 with p410i controller

Hi,

How can I tell if this P410 has the capability to handle a RAID 0 + RAID 5?
QuickSpecs, page#3, with BBWC it can handle (RAID 0/1/1+0/5/5+0)

Is there a step I am missing after adding the new drives?
Did you check the cabling, did you check if the drives are actually compatible with the controller.
Check if controller and/or drives need any FW update.
Search with Drive Model number for FW updates.
Some Advisories may help you to figure out the issue.

What specifications are needed to handle this configuration?
Check if drives and controller are compatible with each other.

If this is a firmware limitation, can the P410 be upgraded to handle this configuration.
You can check and update the FW of P410i

Thank You!
