False CPU Overheat on DL380 G5

We've been fighting 2 servers with the same issue. We've updated the firmware to the latest (BIOS 2008.01.24 (30 Jan 2008))and greatest as well as the PSPs. We've replaced the CPU fans and the fan board. Still no luck ... CPU's show at 255 C. Any ideas?

Re: False CPU Overheat on DL380 G5

hi

first of all
where are you getting those numbers? temperature values?

second of all
any amber - red light?
are servers up and running?

-----------
try this
1. clear NVRAM
2. remove power cable for 1 minute.
3. and also reseat riser cage.

Re: False CPU Overheat on DL380 G5

update to proliant support pack 8.2 and firmware CD 8.2

that's either a system rom issue or HP agents issue reporting incorrect information

Re: False CPU Overheat on DL380 G5

Karlo;

Have you tested 8.2 PSP and Firmware for this specific issue?....

I know my servers have 8.1 and I still have the problem.

Re: False CPU Overheat on DL380 G5

hi

it's part of the troubleshooting process if you call HP...

since it's false message we have to check if it is a bug in the System ROM or hp agents

Steven,
I have another question for you, regarding the load balancing wire on you're P-Class enclosures, I've read your reply on that issue, is it still an issue for you? for me it is now and I would like to know how it was solved o you're site.

Re: False CPU Overheat on DL380 G5

Hello,

It appears this post has been inactive for a time but anyway I´d like to know if there was s resolution on it.

The thing is that I´ve been working with a CU for over 2 weeks now and he has the exact same behavior described at the beginning(255° C on CPU´s sensors). the server is up and running and we´ve applied the latest PSP and FW CD on it with no changes. The IML shows nothing related to temperature and server have not been shutted down due to the same.

Right now I´ve asked the CU to reseat some HW components as well as crearing the NVRAM to see if that makes a difference.

Any suggestions?
Thanks

Re: False CPU Overheat on DL380 G5

Not the best answer but it has worked for me:
1. Thermo paste, it makes a world of difference
2. I once did a rollback on the Bios and it fixed the issue.

Re: False CPU Overheat on DL380 G5

I can tell you that that is a false message it won't affect performance or it won't cause any damage

If I am not wrong (I can double check tomorrow) HP is going to release a new driver for ilo which will fix that CPU high temperature

bye

Re: False CPU Overheat on DL380 G5

I have seen the 255C on multiple DL380G5's. Our first fix recently was to replace the system board, but don't want to do that for all. Is there an Advisory issued by HP on this?

Re: False CPU Overheat on DL380 G5

Alright guys, I certainly appreciate the fast response... I would say the thermal paste should be an option in case the server indeed is having the high temp but in this case it appears to be false information.

I hope the ILO driver is released so we can have that fixed using it instead of having the MB replaced... :)

Re: False CPU Overheat on DL380 G5

Karlo, you were right.
The solution will come in the way of an updated il02 driver, available in the 8.2 PSP available in mid march :(

Once installed the expected behavior is that the server will no longer be degraded in the SMH as a result of inaccurate temperature data being reported to the agents

I guess we are gonna have to wait...

Thanks again

Re: False CPU Overheat on DL380 G5

Any resolution to this issue, as we are now having the same CPU 255C overheat message, yet not error light on front panel.

Re: False CPU Overheat on DL380 G5

Karlo, can you point to a CA(Customer Advisory) that discusses this specific fix?
When you do respond, try to be a bit more understanding of the customer's situtation. No one needs to be treated like children when looking for answers from HP for problems they're having with HP's products.

Re: False CPU Overheat on DL380 G5

customer needs to call HP and request for that document it is bot a public document that's why

basically they are gonna say the say as I did

Hi all,
I have installed the PSP 8.20 and my CPUs have still 255°C :(
What now?
Thanks for any helpful info

Re: False CPU Overheat on DL380 G5

Hi,
I've had the same issue. Support told me that PSP8.20 would be the soultion but as I opened the case in November I did not want to wait. Last week I got a new system board and the error message disappeared.
I am surprised that PSP 8.20 is not the solution, as 2nd level said. This would mean, that a former update crashed the sensors...
It was hard discussion with the support but finally I got a solution.

Re: False CPU Overheat on DL380 G5

Hi Chris,

We have the same problem for months, HP did
same cr.p with us "wait for 8.2" it fixes everything, and it didn't.
What was your final solution ?
Thanks
