Fan Noise ML350 gen11
Hello,
We have a problem with loud fans on 2 new ML350 Gen11 servers.
The servers are up to date.
The fans are constantly running at over 21%.
We installed an ML350 gen11 last year and the fans are running at 11%. This is not up to date.
So it must be a driver, firmware or BIOS update.
No ML350 gen10 servers have this problem, the fans are running at 6-8%.
Maybe others have this problem and a solution.
Thanks

Re: Fan Noise ML350 gen11
Hello,
I have installed the generic Gen11 Agentless Management Service for Microsoft Windows x64, unfortunately the speed of the fans does not change. It is still at 23% and is too loud.

Re: Fan Noise ML350 gen11
Hi @peterb68
If the fan speed is high even after installing AMS, this indicates a possible hardware issue. Further troubleshooting needs to be performed to isolate the issue further. You may consider performing a server power drain to begin with. To do so, shut down the server, disconnect all the external cables including Power, Network, and External devices, then press and hold down the power button.

Re: Fan Noise ML350 gen11
I have now done what you described. After 20 minutes the fan speed increases again to 25%. So this is not a solution.

Re: Fan Noise ML350 gen11
Hi @peterb68 ,
Please try following steps -
1) Verify that the thermal configuration and should be optimized as per the CPU utilization.
2) If third party hardware such as HBAs, controllers etc are installed, test by removing one by one.
3) Remove all the RAM DIMMs and start with minimal required number of DIMMs.
4) Swap the disks and run the server with minimal disks.
5) Check the lab AC must be in proper degree, server should be seated with good air flow.
Refer this post.

Re: Fan Noise ML350 gen11
Good morning, I also have the same problem on the ML350 gen11, minimum temperatures and constant fans at 50%. No proposed solution helped, in fact after updating the drivers and firmware in April the problem got worse. I have another ML350 gen11 purchased 6 months ago and no problems but it has older out of date drivers and firmware. So the problem concerns an update that occurred in the last 6 months. I opened a support ticket to HPE but to date no response.

Good morning, in my case it was solved by performing a fw downgrade of the HPDA version to HPD9 of the 2 300 GB SAS disks

Re: Fan Noise ML350 gen11
Hello,
I have now tested the whole thing with different firmware and BIOS versions.
No success, fan between 26% - 29%.
It can't be that HP isn't able to solve this problem! Can't run tests on the server for hours.
I've been selling HP servers for 20 years but nothing like this has ever happened to me!!!

Re: Fan Noise ML350 gen11
Hello,
more tests today.
By removing the 10 GB NIC the fan now runs at 15%.
Unfortunately it's not a solution for me, I need the 10GB Nic.
Maybe someone has had the same problem before.
With disks and without network card 10GB 13-15%
With disks and network card then it goes to 25-28%
Thanks

Re: Fan Noise ML350 gen11
@ManBha Hello,
I've now done several tests.
The fans are at 13% as long as the virtual servers are not started.
As soon as they start up, the fans go to 24%.
However, the virtual servers only run idle without any load.

Re: Fan Noise ML350 gen11
Hi,
I have a new HP ML350 Gen 11 with 2x 300GB SAS and 4x 900GB SAS.
All latest firmware etc has been applied. (HP SPP 2024.04)
Could you please describe how you downgraded the firmware for the 300GB SAS drives?
The fan noise is very noisy currently - fans running at circa 40%. Am hoping your fix will help.
Regards.

Re: Fan Noise ML350 gen11
We just had this happen to us this morning with a ProLiant ML350 Gen11 Tower (no non-HPE hardware components). No updates/upgrades had gone through any time recently so not sure what caused it. Only thing I can think that triggered it was a scheduled early morning reboot.
Fan speed was sitting at 60-72%, even after another reboot.
We ended up opening a case with HPE who gave us instructions to update BIOS, reboot, then run through all available SPP updates, then reboot again.
After installing all of the SPP updates and rebooting, fan speed returned back to normal (about 6%) . I had read about AMS individually being installed as a suggestion. It was included in these updates so not sure if that's what did the trick.
Hope this helps.

Re: Fan Noise ML350 gen11
Brand new ML350 Gen11 excessive fan noise with power applied and server powered off.
Unplugged all the drives but this had no impact on excessive fan noise.
Factory shipped fans in slots 2, 3, 4 populated.
Disconnected all the fans and noticed that any fan plugged into slot #2 spun up to 100%.
Moved fans to slots 1, 3, 4.
ILO reports server status degraded due to fan missing in slot 2
Fan speed nominal. Temperature nominal.
I have a case open with HPE support and waiting to hear back about possibly replacing some parts.
Firmware:
System ROM U54 v2.48 (03/11/2025)
ILO 1.67 Feb 27 2025
Also updated back plane, raid controller, and power supplies.
