Firmware update failed with reason: Update Failed Error: 47

Hello,

I am testing NIC firmware update on ProLiant DL360 Gen10 and ProLiant DL380 Gen10 Plus servers nevertheless the FW update procedure sporadically fails while it not clear what causes the failure and how to avoid it. The FW update procedure is initiated via Redfish API but the issue was reproduced also manually via iLO GUI. Unfortunatelly I did not find any info about the error 47.

iLO Event Log contains entries like:

The tested HW/firmware is:

• ProLiant DL360 Gen10, BIOS: 2.78 / 2.80, BMC: 2.81 / 2.91
  E810-XXV, NIC FW: 4.10 / 4.20
• ProLiant DL380 Gen10 Plus, BIOS: 1.72 / 1.76, BMC: 2.81 / 2.91
  ConnectX-6 Lx/Dx, NIC FW: 26.35.1012 / 26.37.1700, 22.35.1012 / 22.37.1700

All FW images were downloaded from HPE Support Center:

Hi,

Have you tried the OS based FW update instead of fwpkg?
Here is a similar post, please take a look.
Also make sure you are downloading the right fwpkg, for example, if we see this link for QSFP56. it lists the part number for which its compatible.  If we see the installation instructions, Prerequisites: FWPKG will work only if the firmware version flashed on the adapter is 22.27.1016 or later and iLO5 firmware version must be 2.30 or higher.

The model may be same but part number differs.

thanks for the support.

I did not try the OS based FW update. The upgrade procedure of BIOS/BMC/NIC-FWs is part of our product (java) and should run unattended. I have reproduced it also from command line using curl commands and also directly in iLO GUI. The issue is only with NIC FW update (BIOS/BMC updates run without issues).

I expect that the packages are correct. The upgrade usually works, just in some uknown conditions it starts to fail with the Error 47, and in some unknown conditions it again starts to pass. Also for the mellanox CX-6 Lx/Dx adapters the PSIDs correspond to the firmware packages.

As it was seen for different NIC adapters (E810-XXV, CX-6 Lx/Dx) the problems is most likely no caused by the NIC FW packages(?).

Error 47, I could not find any documentation.
If you are still having the issue, you can try logging a case with HPE Support.

Hi,

OK I will try contact HPE support.

Nevertheless, I did some more testing meanwhile and while I was not able to reproduce the issue on DL380 Gen10 Plus + ConnectX-6 Lx/Dx, I found that with the E810-XXV NIC the issue appears when I try to flash FW version which is already present on the NIC.

I was getting this error on the

2024-08-28T14:06:29.140384-05:00,vida-12ilo,The update task "Firmware Package - HPE Smart Array P408i-p, P408e-p, P408i-a, " has changed state to exception.

I rebooted the iLO and it worked.
