Gen8 Microserver, New User USB Issues

Hi All,

I hope this post is in the right place, please accept apologies if the questions have been asked a milion times, searching brings nothing relevant to what i'm trying to do though.

I have just bought a second hand Gen8, for my son and I to start building a homelab, however, we decided we want to use TrueNAS Scale as the OS for this server.

I have populated the 4 HDD bays with 4x3GB SATA drives, and they are all showing up and I've successfully created an array (apparently) however the USB stick I installed on the internal slot for instaling TrueNAS on will not show up either in iLO or in software ... I'm suessing it's not able to be seen by the BIOS.

So Question 1, How can I get this to be seen? is there some magic setting I've missed?
USB is enabled, everywhere I can see it in the BIOS

Question 2, from some other reading I've done, I need to set the BIOS to Legacy mode to install Scale? I can't find a setting that will allow that to be done, do i even need to do it? is Scale even possible to install on a Gen8?

Hope someone can help me

Thanks In Advance

Welcome,

regarding Question 2.

The Gen8 Microserver has no UEFI (UEFI was introduced later), so it is Legacy BIOS only, no need to switch.

Question 1:

Try a USB Stick not greater than 32GB,  use an MBR partition, not GPT, use a Fat32 filesystem, and no sector sizes above 16KB. Also, the 2 USB 3.0 ports (external, blue) cannot be used for booting.
