Memory upgrade for ProLiant DL380 G5

I recently acquired a gently used DL380 G5.   It has 24 GB of Ram.   The memory sticks are:

4GB 2RX4 PC3-10600R-9.  I want to add more memory to the unit (maybe take it to its max 144GB).

I see there are 18 memory slots on the motherboard.   Looked at the user guide and was a bit confused.

What memory sticks do I need to buy? 8GB 4GB 2RX4 PC3-10600R-9 ?   Do I populate all the slots?

Also, the bios is quite old.  Where can I download the newest bios to apply to the server?

Thanks for any help.

Re: Memory upgrade for ProLiant DL380 G5

Hello,

You may refer to the "HPE ProLiant DL380 G5 Server's QuickSpecs", expand section "Memory" for further information. This same section has memory modules population guidelines.

You may refer to the "HPE ProLiant DL380 G5 Server's Maintenance and Service Guide", section "Memory options > Memory configurations" for memory configuration information as well.

You may select a suitable download option for the server's BIOS from the "Drivers and Software" of the HPE ProLiant DL380 G5 Server's product page.

Re: Memory upgrade for ProLiant DL380 G5

looking at the HPE ProLiant DL380 G5 Server's Maintenance and Service Guide, I am a bit confused.

In the memory section it states that there are 8 memory slots.   When I physically take the lid off the server and remove the plastic shield, there are 9 memory slots for each processor.   My server has (2) Xeon processors so the total memory slots is 2x9 or 18.   In addition, on page 56 it states the server has FBDIMMS.   I pulled a stick from the server and its 4GB 2RX4 PC3-10600R-9 (an RDIMM).

I know the server can be optioned differently and the documentation tries to account for that, But I am still unclear.

Do I populate all 18 ports with 8GB 2RX4 PC3-10600R-9 memory stickes ?

Re: Memory upgrade for ProLiant DL380 G5

Thanks for the document references.  I have looked at the documents and they don't match what I see inside my HP Proliant DL380 G7 server.  Ah man, I said G5 in title.   My server is a DL380 G7.   It has 18 memory slots (9 per processor).  My server has (2) processors.   The memory in my server now is 4GB 2RX4 PC3-10600R-9 (an RDIMM) sticks.

Can I just put (18) 8GB 2RX4 PC3-10600R-9 in it to max out at 144GB ram ?

Re: Memory upgrade for ProLiant DL380 G5

@Sham82

I purchased 8GB sticks (18) and installed them in the server.  On boot, it says Processor 1 dimms 7,8,9 and procecessor 2 dimms 1,2,3 are not installed.   Is there a bios change I  have to make to get all 18 slots recognized ?

Thanks.
