Hi,
My hp proliant server exihibits a revving sound from the power supply similar to that below (taken from someone else's post).
I believe this is a known problem. I suspect it has to do with Ilo4 causing issues with PCIE cards. There is a Ilo 2.77 hack available that allows control of the Fan.
I eventually decided it was unusable and I have taken the PCIE card out. I am waiting for the hp recommended PCI 4 NIC card which hopefully will work better in this machine.

I have added a secondary power supply (503296-B21) and the problem still occurs.
It is intermittent as sometimes it will just goes away. I have
Firmware flashed (ProLiant System BIOS - J04 04/04/2019)
and ILO 2.28.
Sensor information is below.

Re: HP HP ProLiant ML310E Gen8 (J04) v2 Fan Problem - Revving of power supply (With 4 NIC PCI)
Hi
Is the fan speed normal after removing the PCI adapter?
If yes, what is the adapter model ?
What is the primary usage of the server ?
As mentioned, when the fan noise goes away, is the server idle without any activity ? or if it is with load what activity ?

Hi,
Answers below.

Michael
Is the fan speed normal after removing the PCI adapter?
Yes it is very quiet.
If yes, what is the adapter model ?
IBM 94Y5167 49Y4241 Intel I340-T4 Quad Port Ethernet GB PCI Network Adapter It uses about 12W according to the spec.
What is the primary usage of the server ?
firewall so needs 4 NIC card
As mentioned, when the fan noise goes away, is the server idle without any activity ? or if it is with load what activity ?
Unfortunately I cannot replicate the fan noise going away when the PCI card is inserted. I have tried to insert the card in different slots but none work.
The PC used to run with the PCI NIC with a lower ILO version. Ever since upgrading the ILO version + BIOS it has started happening. (2.82 + J04 2019 Bios) The server used to run at between 50 and 60W.

Re: HP HP ProLiant ML310E Gen8 (J04) v2 Fan Problem - Revving of power supply (With 4 NIC
Thank you. Verify if the driver for the IBM adapter is updated. Also the Agentless management version updated too. If updated, test by downgrading the ILO to the old version (Which as installed previously when no issue noticed).
To answer you question " I am waiting for the hp recommended PCI 4 NIC card which hopefully will work better in this machine. " -- Refer to the adapters supported on ML310e Gen8 server (Page 23) under HP Networking section.

Note: HPE has not tested the server with 3rd party PCI adapters.
