HP Insight Diagnostics reports "This drive has FAILED and should be replaced."

Hi,
We run a ProLiant DL380 G5 server with Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2, x64 Standard Edition Service Pack 2. Everything is ok regarding the OS and programs, but when I run HP Insight Diagnostics and make a Diagnose in the Status tab I receive the output that 1 of 2 physical drives is failed and should be replaced. Regarding this I am attaching a printscreen... It is configured with Raid 1+0. What should I do? Should I replace this disk, even if the server seems normal now and the led in the HDD is green? If I should replace it, how can I do it without loosing the data? Thank you.

Re: HP Insight Diagnostics reports "This drive has FAILED and should be replaced."

I would check the drive from ACU and maybe pull an ADU report before replacing anything.

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: HP Insight Diagnostics reports "This drive has FAILED and should be replaced."

Install the latest firmware on all drives. It could be a firmware glitch, I saw this once before. HP has also brought out 3 bad drives in one day to replace a drive.

Hi,

Array Diagnostic Utility Version 7.80.6.0

P400
Controller Firmware Rev: 4.06
Disks:

DG072A4951 - HPD6
DG072BB975 - HPDC

Upgrade the PSP and firmware.

--

Hrd Read is empty on both disks.
So as far as I can tell ADU report looks good.

Could this be worrisome though?
Bus Flts 00000038 00000038
Same on both disks so probably not.

Re: HP Insight Diagnostics reports "This drive has FAILED and should be replaced."

This is the download:

** CRITICAL ** Online ROM Flash Component for Windows - Smart Array P400 and P400i

Click on the link, in there you will have release notes, installation instructions, revision history etc.

On the same link that you posted there is a search form at the top of the page.
If you take the model number of your hard drives and put them in there, you will find downloads for the disk drive firmware.

I can't seem to find the model number of my HDDs. How can I find them?

Re: HP Insight Diagnostics reports "This drive has FAILED and should be replaced."

I posted them above :)

But it should be possible to find in the ACU too.. maybe you have to switch to 'physical view' and then click on the disks?

Re: HP Insight Diagnostics reports "This drive has FAILED and should be replaced."

Some of my drive firmware was not listed on the server driver page. I had to call HP to get it.

Oh? I always assumed that it meant that they just weren't released yet :)

Re: HP Insight Diagnostics reports "This drive has FAILED and should be replaced."

Ok, I downloaded the HDD firmwares, but in the installation instructions it is written: "4 - Download the package: "HDD Firmware Release for HP Integrity Diagnostics - drives.zipâ and extract the files. Copy DFDUTIL.EFI, ODE.EFI, and SLMOD.EFI along with the firmware files to z:\EFI\HP\Firmware\"
Where can I download these files?

Re: HP Insight Diagnostics reports "This drive has FAILED and should be replaced."

What you downloaded is for the integrity servers, as you have a DL380 G5 you should not download and try to load them.

For example this one popped up when I searched on the first of your disks:

Re: HP Insight Diagnostics reports "This drive has FAILED and should be replaced."

Did you upgrade proliant support pack (this includes the insight diagnostics) and controller firmware too?

Maybe the problem is in the diagnostics :)

Re: HP Insight Diagnostics reports "This drive has FAILED and should be replaced."

I run 3 update files:
** CRITICAL ** Online ROM Flash Component for Windows - Smart Array P400 and P400i
and the Online ROM flash component for windows for both the HDD.
should I update anything else? where can I find it/them?

Re: HP Insight Diagnostics reports "This drive has FAILED and should be replaced."

On the link you posted above there is a download under the "Software - Support Pack" section, or you can upgrade packages individually a little further down.

Latest "Insight Diagnostics Online edition" is currently "8.7.0.3946"

Re: HP Insight Diagnostics reports "This drive has FAILED and should be replaced."

Why not get the 9.30 firmware dvd, update the firmware offline, then install the PSP?

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: HP Insight Diagnostics reports "This drive has FAILED and should be replaced."

In general, this kind of message appears after the drive has failed or before? If it appears after, and giving that in reality it has not failed, can I just ignore this message, if there is not any other solution?

Re: HP Insight Diagnostics reports "This drive has FAILED and should be replaced."

The diagnostic doesn't give detail in regards to exactly what it's trigging on so it's hard to tell.

Is it still under warranty?
If so why not get HP to replace the disk?
Apparently HP's software thinks there is something wrong with the disk.. Why have a diagnostic tool if you can't trust the results?

Anyway, as far as what I could see (I'm not an expert on ADU reports..) there weren't any major issues (hard read errors) on the disks, so they should be in good status.

Re: HP Insight Diagnostics reports "This drive has FAILED and should be replaced."

Ok, so, should I close this thread, is there any other idea?
By the way I am posting a new thread with a similar problem in another server. Please check it if it is possible.
