HP NIC in a non-HP server
hi all
i'm looking at purchasing a "HP NC7170 PCI-X Dual Port 1000T Gigabit Server Adapter"
and installing it into a non HP server
the PCI slot on the non-HP server is 64bit/100mhz (which by the HP website the PCI slot will accept the NIC)
i really like the HP dual 1000base cards and the managment software that comes with it.
can anyone see a problem with me installing it into a non HP server?
- i think the answers No.. (just wanna be sure)
thanks
Justin

Re: HP NIC in a non-HP server
Depending on the slot speed/bit width (with slower / narrow slot, it will not be as efficient) the HP Nic's will work ok with other hardware aswell, as long as the drivers are installed.

Re: HP NIC in a non-HP server
Once of the things reported through the Network Config Utility which comes with these HP nics is the slot #. If it's installed in a non HP server it may not report the slot information correctly, since it requires the system mgmt driver be installed.
The nic should work fine otherwise though.

The truth is out there, but I forgot the URL..

Re: HP NIC in a non-HP server
The management software (Network Configuration Utility) does not work on non-HP servers. The NCU checks that the server is an HP server and also checks that an HP NIC is installed in the system. If both condition aren't met, it either won't install or won't load.
