Hello,
I have HPE DL380 Gen8, with 8 SFF cage and optical drive on front, RAID controller is Smart Array P420I
I would like to upgrade this server with another 8SFF cage - 662883-B21, because I need 16 drives.
What else would I need to buy so I can use all 16 drives ?
Do I need to buy another storage controler ? or anything else ?

Re: HPE 380p Gen8 - Drive Cage
You continue to use a single controller, but use a SAS expander to allow additional enclosures to be added.

Re: HPE 380p Gen8 - Drive Cage
Please remember that P420i controller is only 6Gb/s SAS. So do I also need to use 6Gb SAS expander ?
Do you have an SKU for that SAS expander ?

Re: HPE 380p Gen8 - Drive Cage
Hi
As per server quickspecs below ,NOTE: The optional +8SFF drive bay requires an additional internal storage
controller be selected. HP recommends the HP Smart Array P420/1GB
FBWC 6Gb 2-ports Int SAS Controller (P/N 631670-B21).(Refer page 7 in below server Quick Specs)

Re: HPE 380p Gen8 - Drive Cage
So That mean's I need another P420 to connect 8SFF cage ?
My constrution will be acroding to that:
P420i controler will work as RAID and will have connected 2 x SSD for System
And second controler P420 (on PCIe), will work as HBA - Passthroug and will have connected 8 drives for vSAN

SolutionYour controller has no mixed mode for RAID and HBA at the same time anyway, so get another disk controller.
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.
