HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 Server - Boot Issue

Hello all,

I have purchased this HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 server refurbished a few months ago and I have recently had it switched on for the first time, but I have found out that something was wrong with it. Apparantly the server is booting up but then it crashes at random times before it starts again, sometimes these crashes can be long or short after each time it started booting up.

The server does not have an operating system installed other than access to the iLO 5 interface which showed everything to be healthy, I have checked the logs and I cannot find anything to suggest the cause of the boot loop.

After a bit of digging into this problem, I am starting to think the "Smart Array" could be potential culprit to this because as soon as the tick appears on the POST screen, it crashes the boot and goes into standby before starting again. So I suspect this could be a faulty P408i controller which is something I have installed onto the server motherboard.

Another thing could be the ROM (BIOS) firmware which might needed to be updated because it did state in the new version release that it "fixed an issue where system may reboot infinitely when a faulty PCIE card was installed", although not related to the P408i controller but may indicate something else.

I currently have an RMA ticket open to return the P408i controller back to my supplier, so I just wanted to investigate a little bit more by reaching out on here to anyone who have experienced this similar issue.

I also have a video to demonstrate this and I will add this into the post once I've uploaded it.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Ben

I have also attached a photo of the boot error I've found, could be potential cause.

Re: HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 Server - Boot Issue

Hi,

I have updated all of the firmware but unfortunately this haven't resolved the issue. I have already tried reseating a couple components, including the PSUs, controllers etc but this does not help either.

So I am suspecting this to be a faulty motherboard which is something I have now raised with my supplier.

Regards,

Ben
