Hyper-V Slow Backups Broadcom BCM5719 HPE Proliant DL380 Gen11

Hi All,

On a bare metal HPE DL380 Gen11, we can backup 6 million small files (Office documents, PDFs etc, 8.23TB total) to a MSL 2024 LTO8 tape drive in 13h 29m at 10.41Gb/min

On another HPE DL380 Gen11 we have running the Hyper-V Role, a Backup Application and MSL 2024 LTO8 tape drive with 1 x Virtual Machine configured with:

6 cores
64Gb RAM
16TB VHDX contains the 6 million small files 8.23TB total
Aa backup agent installed
Hyper-V SET Team (3 x Broadcom BCM5719 Ethernet 1Gb 4-port BASE-T Adapter for HPE)

However, Backup duration to the MSL 2024 LTO8 tape drive is 35h 3.5Gb/min

How can we improve the throughput?

The Broadcom BCM5719 is designed for bare metal rather than hypervisors e.g. as per the KB below no support for tunnel offload, RDMA,VMQ,SR-IOR etc

Thanks!

Your Hyper-V setup's reduced backup throughput is likely due to the Broadcom BCM5719 network adapters lacking virtualization features like VMQ and SR-IOV. To improve performance, consider disabling VMQ on these adapters or upgrading to network adapters that fully support virtualization features.

Thank you for replying.

The issue was the backup software required file/folder exclusions to be applied, back to 11Gb/minute.
