Increasing partition on C:, old DL380

Hi,

I've an old original DL380, which only has a 3Gb Win2K partion for C: and around 60Gb for E: spare. This is spread out on a RAID5 array, over 2x36Gb disks + 1 spare. Theres one logical drive.

I'd like to shift some of the spare space from the 60gb partition across, but I'm not sure if the HP Array tools will let me do that. Normally, I'd just use Norton Ghost to create an image of the machine, and then restore, resizing the partitions on the fly, but the array makes that impossible.

Are there any other (free-ish) solutions ?

Windows does not allows you to dynamically increase the system partition. Norton Ghost is a good option as you described. If you want to free some space, you could move the pagefile.sys file to the E partition using system properties.

The array controller will only change the way that disks are presented to the operating systems, in your case one disk.

You will need to use third party tools like Norton Ghost. Why do you believe that the array makes this impossible? Is it a driver issue? The Array controller will not care what you do with the logical disk space in Windows.

The only version of Ghost I have is the old DOS version, using a Bart Boot CD/Floppy. When I try this in the server, it crashes at various points (loading network drivers, even just reaching the C drive).... But I still have a few ideas left... I just hoped the HP tools would've made it easier.

Hi adrianmarsh,
Please go through the following thread..

http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=993564

If you need norton ghost ( I'm having 2k1 & 2k3 , both are able to detect even adaptec 2120S new raid controllers) please post your mail id, I will send you...

You can use partition magic also for resizing partitions....

Shameer.V.A:

Thanks for the offer... I think I sus'd it. I had a spare drive slot and a spare 140Gb drive... so I created a second array... booted from dos with a really basic disk (no network/scsi/etc). I was able to copy LogDisk1 -> LogDisk2, and am now in the process of LogDisk2 -> 1 with modified partitions. I just hope the boot blocks don't change too much. Not sure how the Compaq tools partition will play into it. Will let you know how it goes (30mins or so).

Yep. My solution worked a treat. Still don't know why the drivers caused the problems they did, just old I guess.

Thanks anyway folks.
