Issue with RAID
I have an HPE ML350 G10 with a 3 disk RAID5 as a logical volume. One of the drives was degraded so I replaced it and waited for it to rebuild. Then another drive showed as 'predictive failure' so I decided to add two new drives to the array. I added them physically then tried extending the RAID with those two drives. The extension said it failed initially and I had to re-enable the logical disk. Unfortunately, when the drive booted, ESXi booted fine but the vm is showing as invalid. IS there a way to get the RAID working again with its data intact?

Hi,
Adding two new drives out of three in Raid 5. I think the data is lost, you should have taken a backup before replacing the drive.

As i Mentioned, I replaced drive 3 first, then waited for the RAID to rebuild before I attempted the "extension" with the other added drives.

Here are some steps you can take to potentially recover the RAID configuration and your data:
Important Note: Before proceeding, make sure you have a backup of your data if possible. RAID operations can be risky, and data breakage can occur during these processes.
>> Use the HPE Smart Storage Administrator or a similar tool to check the current status of your RAID array. Make sure all physical drives are online and functional. Also, confirm the logical drive status.
>> Ensure that all the new drives you added are recognized and in good health. Check if they are part of the RAID array. If any drives are still showing as predictive failure or degraded, you may need to replace them.
>> Look for any error or status messages in the RAID controller's logs. This can provide more information about what went wrong during the extension process.
>> If the extension process caused issues, try to revert to the previous RAID configuration that was working. This might involve removing the newly added drives from the array and restoring the RAID 5 to its original state.
>> If necessary, perform a rebuild operation to ensure the array is in a healthy state. Let the RAID controller rebuild the data on the array if it hasn't already.
>> Once the RAID array is back in a good state, check the VM's data integrity. If the VM still shows as invalid, you may need to perform a file system check or repair operation within the guest OS.
>> If you have a backup of the VM, consider restoring it from the backup. This can be a quicker way to get your VM back up and running if data breakage is not acceptable.
>> If you are unsure about the steps to take or if you are unable to resolve the issue on your own, it's advisable to contact HPE support for further analysis.
Remember that RAID operations can be complex and carry a risk of data breakage if not done correctly. If you are not comfortable with these tasks or if data integrity is crucial, consider seeking assistance from a professional with expertise in RAID management and data recovery.
