ML150 G6 - New P410 controller not detecting SATA HD's during boot

I have a Proliant ML150 G6, 4gb RAM, x2 250Gb SATA drives, running raid via software b110i, WIN2008 SBS.

(all default h/w from original purchase).  Server runs fine and boots with no issue, HD's work fine.

I decided to add a P410/512 BBWC controller and run hardware RAID verses s/wThe idea is get this working then later update drives and move to ESXi.  Easier said than done it seems.

- Install controller card and use SFF8087 to x4sata cable to connect card to the two drives.

- Start server, P410 initialize ok but it does not detect the drives after that.

- If I move drives back to mother board, and boot via s/w raid all is well again

- If I boot the server via s/w raid to Windows, I can use the ACU and view the P410 no problem and can see the current version, battery status etc.. ok

I have attempted to update the misc software via the HP DVD smart update disc, it did update the P410 controller but still same thing, does not recongnize the drives.

Am I just overlooking something really easyI am a newbie so perhaps a user error.

Cheers,
Merlin

Re: ML150 G6 - New P410 controller not detecting SATA HD's during boot

May have just realized the issue, I hope :)

The controller to drive cable (no HD backplain, direct to drives) I have is;

"The SAS8087S4R50 SFF-8087 to 4x SATA Reverse cable features one 36-pin plug (SFF-8087),
 which fans out to four SATA 7-pin receptacles, providing a reliable solution for
connecting a Mini SAS backplane to a SAS / SATA RAID controller or motherboard."
* Good thing I found the bag with the model # etc...!

This sounds like maybe the ~correct~ cable;
"The SAS8087S450 SFF-8087 to 4x SATA SAS cable features one 36-pin plug (SFF-8087),
which fans out to four SATA 7-pin receptacles, providing a reliable solution for connecting
 up to four SATA HDDs to a SAS controller or backplane."

Does this sound about right?

The two cables look "identical".  Put the correct cable in BINGO, P410 now sees the SATA drives fine.
