ML150 G9 boards LEDs "counting"?

Hi,

I have a ML150 G9 server where we installed a new 843671 motherboard for using Xeon v4 CPUs. After installing it, we weren't able to boot and the power on button remained on "flashing green", which should be "Performing power on sequence".
I managed to access iLO and upgrade P95 firmware to 2.82, but this did not fix the problem. I've tried using switches 1, 5, 6 to go back to the backup ROM but this issue was still present. I've also tried booting with 1 CPU and minimal RAM, using a v3 CPU, disconnecting the RAID controller, reseating the RAM.

After some power cycling, the system board LEDs started counting in binary from 0 to 15 and I couldn't login to iLO anymore or get the pre boot information on screen.
I can't find any documentation for this LEDs online.

Thanks.

Hello,

You may clear the server's NVRAM and see if it makes a difference.

To do so, power off the server and remove the power cables from it and remove the access panel.

You may refer to item number 25 on the figure "System board components" on page 10 of the HPE ProLiant ML150 Gen9 Server's User Guide to locate the system maintenance on the system board.

Once identified, set switch 'S6' to 'On' position from the default 'Off' position, replace the access panel and then connect the power cables and power on the server.

When you see a message mentioning that a system maintenance switch has been turned on and that its position needs to be reveresed, then power off the server and remove the power cable.

Remove the access panel and revert switch 'S6's position to 'Off'.

Hello,
thanks for your help. I've tried this solution too, but it didn't work. I still get the counting LEDs.
I get no "maintenance switch detected" message on screen, nor the pre-boot screen.
Today I've mounted back my 806840 board and everything is working as expected.

Hi There,

We have checked that the new system board supports v3 and v4 CPUs.

We'd suggest to check with another system board (With the same spare part number, if available)

843671-001 System I/O board (motherboard) - Supports Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 (Haswell) and E5-2600 v4 (Broadwell) processors - Includes base pan assembly, alcohol pad, and thermal grease syringe - Processors must be the same spare part number

If the same issue prevails, please contact HPE support.

@ngnear

Hi,
Yes, we bought the 843671 specifically for installing two v4 CPUs (E5-2683) instead of the v3 we had on before (E5-2609) on the original 806840 board. I've tried both v3 and v4 CPUs on the new board.
This happens as soon as I press the start button (which keeps flashing green) and I don't get any pre-boot information by clicking the UID button on the back.

I'd like to know what those LEDs mean before calling back the seller, since this board was supposed to be tested.
I've also been informed via PM that an HP support case has been opened, but I don't think this will go very far since we don't have a support contract for the server.

Thanks

Re: ML150 G9 boards LEDs "counting"?

@SimonItaly

Good day!

On HPE servers, the system board LEDs usually indicate the status of various components during the boot process. These LEDs can vary in their number, color, and placement depending on the server model. While the exact behavior of the LEDs may differ between different server models, I can provide you with some general information about the LEDs on HPE ProLiant servers.

Typical LED indicators on HPE ProLiant servers include:

1. Power LED: This LED indicates the power status of the server. A steady green light usually means the server is receiving power and is in a healthy state.

2. UID LED: The UID (Unit Identification) LED is typically used to visually identify a specific server within a rack or data center. It can usually be controlled through the iLO (Integrated Lights-Out) interface.

3. Health LED: The Health LED provides an overall status indication of the server's health. A green light typically indicates a normal, healthy state, while other colors or flashing patterns may indicate various issues or error conditions.

4. NIC (Network Interface Card) LED: These LEDs are usually associated with the server's network ports and indicate link status and activity.

It's important to note that the specific behavior of the LEDs can vary between different server models and may not be standardized across all HPE servers.

Since the behavior you described is not commonly documented, it would be best to reach out HPE Support for further assistance.

Additionally, double-checking the compatibility of the CPUs, RAM, and other components with the 843671 motherboard is recommended. It's possible that there may be compatibility issues or specific configuration requirements that need to be addressed.

Aa far as this"I've also been informed via PM that an HP support case has been opened, but I don't think this will go very far since we don't have a support contract for the server." AFAIK, these are free cases and not tied to the serial numbers of your product because serial number is confidential information and should not be shared in public forums. Thats why they do not show up in support center also.

These are my opinions so use it at your own risk.
