ML30 Gen9 HD replacement with SSD

I have a ML30 Gen9  with 4 1TB HP SATA HD (ATA MM1000GBKAL) in RAID 1+0 that are at 53500 hours each, using the built in B140i RAID controller.

I would like to replace the drives with SSD:

  • Can I replace each HD with an HP SSD one at a time, unitl the RAID array is rebuilt, then replace the next HD until all 4 HD are replaced with SSD?
  • There are no 1TB HP SSD listed. Can I use 960GB SSD to replace each HD in the array, unitl all 4 are replaced?
  • Must I use HP SSD? Can I use Samsung EVO 870 SSD or an equivalent (non HP) brand SSD?

Hello,

A RAID array does not allow mixing drive types. This means that you will not be able to re-build as stated in the first bullet point.

The HPE Smart Array controllers and HPE hard drives are designed to have smooth communication. The third party drives do not have this factor in them and hence, may or may not be compatible, which is why the recommendation for HPE hard drives.

When third party hard drives are installed, the server's iLO which is desiged to communicate with all installed devices to read the thermal sensors on them for modulating fan speed to optimal cooling, would not be receiving any thermal information and could result in the fans running at higher speeds, as iLO could consider the need for increasing the fan speed to pre-empt possible thermal issues.
