Re: Ml350 G5 - DVD disappears in Windows

Is it an IDE drive or a SATA?

What the server processor configuration?

Did it earlier come with an IDE drive?

Re: Ml350 G5 - DVD disappears in Windows

Ok, will try to check.

BTW is the restart and full shutdown issue mentioned in other posts applicable to your issue as well?

Re: Ml350 G5 - DVD disappears in Windows

What is the option part number of your Proliant ML350 G5 and what kind of CPU do you have?

- Please note that not all the Proliants ML350 G5 support adding SATA Optical Drives. To ensure compatibility of the SATA Optical Drives, please add additional optical drives only on models with Quad-Core 5400 Series processors.

Just in case! There is only one SATA port in the system board designed to connect the the SATA DVD on those ML350 G5 that support SATA Optical Drives. Make sure the DVD is not connected on a different slot. Check the user guide on page 66 "SATA Optical Drive Cabling" or page 76 "System board components" and check the number 13 "SATA optical connector (Select models only)" do you have the SATA DVD connected there? Is this connector available in the system board?

Re: Ml350 G5 - DVD disappears in Windows

no mine came with SATA DVD

I already read that

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&objectID=c01277123&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN

and even reading that I think there should be no problem for people who had IDE and later that you need to get a SATA in specs does not say yo need to have 54xx model to get a DVD SATA...poor documentation maybe

oh sorry

found it ;-)

NOTE: Please note that some of the earlier BTO models may not support adding SATA Optical Drives. To ensure compatibility of the SATA Optical Drives, please add additional optical drives only on models with Quad-Core 5400 Series processors.

but mine came with that

Re: Ml350 G5 - DVD disappears in Windows

Hi Kensy
Could you check the Device Manager and let me know if there is an "Adaptec SATA HOST RAID Controller" listed, under the SCSI/RAID controllers?

If it is listed, we can try a force install of the IDE drivers.

Re: Ml350 G5 - DVD disappears in Windows

thanks

if that's a SATA DVD what IDE has to do with that?

yes it says "Adaptec SATA HOST RAID Controller"

Re: Ml350 G5 - DVD disappears in Windows

Hi Kensy
I suppose the DVD drive works fine before the OS loads, and there should be no issues booting from the DVD drive. However, the drive would disappear in Windows ONLY.

If that is the case, try the following steps:
Go to Device Manager - Right click 'Adaptec HOST RAID SATA Controller', select Update Driver - Install driver manually - Select Do not search, I'll choose the location - From the list of compatible devices, select PCI IDE Device and install the drivers.

Let me know if that helps.
BTW, we are trying to install the IDE drivers (native to the OS), to isolate an issue with the SATA interface of the optical drive.

Re: Ml350 G5 - DVD disappears in Windows

Hy guys,

I've got exactly the same problem on the same server type/model/os and firmware, with the difference that the DVD is totally invisible in the device manager and in the Hp sys management utility.

I confirm that the issue verifies ONLY if I reboot the server from Windows. Instead on each shut down and powerup the DVD is present again.

Firmware upgrade and microsoft patch didn't work for me.

Please help me 'cause my customer is a little worry about this trouble.

many thanks in advance

by the way I've seen in W2003 as well as W2008

Re: Ml350 G5 - DVD disappears in Windows

My company is now on our sixth ML350 G5 exhibiting this behavior.

We can replicate it at will by doing a hard shutdown, power on and go into setup and change anything you like, exit from setup and let the machine reboot. If there is a bootable CD in the drive, it will not be seen, and the boot process will skip over and go to the OS.

We have this on servers with the January 08 BIOS, the August BIOS and the latest BIOS released in October.

Calling Tech support is not proving productive.

Re: Ml350 G5 - DVD disappears in Windows

Apparently it's not just Windows... and I thought it was just us...

We've configured 10 ML350G5 servers since sometime in July that have had the SATA DVD drives installed (previous G5s were IDE?).

We are running SCO 6 and can duplicate the problem if we mount a CD in the drive, read it, and reboot the server.

SCO6 automatically configures devices upon boot but the device will not come back until the CD is removed and the server is powered off and back on again.

Re: Ml350 G5 - DVD disappears in Windows

Not a fix, but a work around.

Open device manager
Look for Serial ATA Raid Driver
Right Click
Update Driver
Select I will Choose
Manual
Next
From Two Options select Standard.

This means the DVD will work slower but will get you out of trouble!

Spent another two hours on the phone to HP and they dont have a clue about how bad this issue is nor will they accept what needs to be done, their best answer was "we will send out a replacement motherboard" even though we have four servers on our workbench today all with exactly the same problem.

Nice work HP!

Re: Ml350 G5 - DVD disappears in Windows

That doesn't fix it for me, but more importantly, do you recommend rolling back from BIOS version 2008.09.30 (A)27 Oct 2008?

Re: Ml350 G5 - DVD disappears in Windows

Well that version worked for me on a Proliant ML350 G5 with that issue. You should try it.

Re: Ml350 G5 - DVD disappears in Windows

guys there is a fix a new System ROM

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=15351&prodSeriesId=1121586&swItem=MTX-e0d43d49df3c4be3b2709e8d3e&prodNameId=3279711&swEnvOID=1005&swLang=8&taskId=135&mode=4&idx=2

Resolved an issue where the system can not boot to media in certain DVD-RW SATA optical drives. This issue is only seen on warm resets and only impacts ML350 G5 systems with SATA optical drives.

Re: Ml350 G5 - DVD disappears in Windows

I just had the same issue the end user reported a yellow bang under Adaptec HOST RAID SATA and the optical drive is missing, we downloaded the latest PSP but no changes after applied it, we then applied the latest System Rom 2008.11.02 (10 Dec 2008), reboot the server, same situation, then we did a clear NV RAM no changes, and then finally we followed the steps recommended by andy:

"Go to Device Manager - Right click 'Adaptec HOST RAID SATA Controller', select Update Driver - Install driver manually - Select Do not search, I'll choose the location - From the list of compatible devices, select PCI IDE Device and install the drivers."

And this fixed both issues, of course if the Adaptec HOST RAID SATA Controller problem is not present, you just need to do the System ROM update
