Re: ML350 G6 UPS issues?

And that's where it gets even more silly because many people say the Eaton UPSs work fine!

Silly? Hmmm. Makes me wonder.

See Mikes post of October 2nd. Some Eatons work, some don't. Seems to be the status with most brands.

The issue is the response as well as the fix.

Re: ML350 G6 UPS issues?

I agree with the lack of notification from HP. How about something like a service bulletin?
Anyways, testing the UPS with a scope is a great idea - that could save you lots of time, money, and select a better UPS.
I'm going to get a used scope from Kijiji or craigslist.

Re: ML350 G6 UPS issues?

Hello !

I receive an answer from APC about the model of UPS to use with a HP PROLIANT ML350 G6.

"It's recommended to use a Smart-UPS SMT1500I."

Re: ML350 G6 UPS issues?

Well, I would disagree with the comments about HP UPSs work okay with HP G6 series servers. We are using HP R3000 UPSs and get the same problem as described, G6 servers shutting down uncommanded and not powering up again. Other servers on the same UPS continue to work fine. Having just found this thread it is reassuring to know that we are not alone as sufferers!

Re: ML350 G6 UPS issues?

i can confirm that a Smart UPS 1500 has indeed fixed my problem on one of the 2 HP ML 350 G6's that i was experiencing this with. i will be ordering another one for the 2nd G6 (at a 2nd location) and will post my findings.

i'm seriously disgusted with HP that there simply wasn't more information about this right off the bat...CDW has no idea that this is an issue, so how many people have bought these servers and been stuck in this very situation?

Re: ML350 G6 UPS issues?

cmprather,

Is that the SC1500? If so then that's really weird because the SC1500 forces our DL380 G7 PSUs to fail :(

Had to get an APC Online RT2000 to fix it.

Re: ML350 G6 UPS issues?

cmprather,
What is the exact model/part# you've ordered/tested to work with your ML350G6?

There are a few UPS1500 listed by APC - i just want to be sure we narrow down the correct one.

Re: ML350 G6 UPS issues?

This reply is to confirm that changing the UPS fixed this issue. The UPS that worked is

EATON 9130 UPS 700VA 630W 120V 2U RM

Re: ML350 G6 UPS issues?

I also went with an Eaton 9130 - no problems. I liked the 9130 - a few different options on it.

Same problem with a ML350 G6 single 460W PSU and APC SC 1000VA. Tried another cheap UPS 1000VA which model i do not know at the moment also not working and will try a APC SMART UPS 1500VA (SUA model) next week.

Re: ML350 G6 UPS issues?

Guys the 'SC' models of APC ups devices will NOT work with the G6 line.

Re: ML350 G6 UPS issues?

why would anyone skimp on electrical or UPS for an expensive server. The server should have its own dedicated circuit and a quality UPS. It would be like putting cheap gas an a Corvette.

Re: ML350 G6 UPS issues?

If you go to the APC website you can clearly see that the Smart-UPS SC 1500 unit uses a "stepped approximation to a sinewave". This seems to be causing power dropout issues to the HP servers.

The Smart-UPS 1500 on the other hand lists Waveform Type as "Sine wave".

The SC is half the price but it won't keep your server running. Your choice.

Re: ML350 G6 UPS issues?

We purchased 2 ML350 G6 servers which shutdown and would not restart when plugged in to a standard line-interactive UPS. We then bought a Tripplite SU1500XL and connected both servers. This UPS will keep both servers up during self test. We did not test how long the servers would stay up on battery because we switch-over to a backup generator in 30 sec and just need the UPS to bridge the gap between line failure and switchover. This UPS solved our problem.
