Multiple CPU detection in Windows Server 2003

Hi, I've seen this problem pass in the forum a couple of times and am faced with the same.

Installed Windows Server 2003 however only 1 CPU is detected in the Device Manager.

Is reinstalling the OS, choosing NT4 in SCU 2.58 the only option ? Does it work ?

Is there a step-by-step approach to this ?

Should I forget 2003 and settle with 2000 ?

Appreciate any and all help, Yvar

Hello Yvar,
What is your selection in SCU right now?? Try using the "Other" in SCU to see if that would help.

Re: Multiple CPU detection in Windows Server 2003

It's at "other" right now, but before I do a completely new install (using another selction in the SCU), I'd like to know if it 'll work in any case.

Or if 2000 works definately and is the better choice for the ProLiant 5000.

Re: Multiple CPU detection in Windows Server 2003

Hello Yvar,
I would say stick to W2K for better results on a PL5000.

Yeah, thought as much, at least it still fully supports the 5K, better to have it working to the max then only half.

Thanks again.

Re: Multiple CPU detection in Windows Server 2003

try this...

1. Upgrade the firmware of the machine.

2. Download the latest System Configuration Utility and create the floppies.

3. Boot SCU and use CTRL-A to enter advanced mode.
a. set the o/s = Windows 2000
b. set apic mode = full table mapped

4. Install Windows Server 2003.

5. After installation you can switch apic mode to full table (the optimal
setting).

Okay it's looking good, now where do I do step 5 ? In the SCU ?

Re: Multiple CPU detection in Windows Server 2003

Hello Yvar,
Just go back to the system configuration, control A and in the Advanced features- APIC mode. That's where you were earlier.

Re: Multiple CPU detection in Windows Server 2003

Hello Yvar,
Do both the CPUs show up during POST?? If they do then there is a setting in OS to see both the CPUs. Please let me know if that is the case.

Re: Multiple CPU detection in Windows Server 2003

What CPUs are you using? Certain Pentium Pro & Pentium II CPUs are not supported in multiple CPU configurations by Microsoft & Intel with Windows 2003 server. The OS will simply never use the extra CPUs.

According to the MS KB article, this is a known hardware issue with these CPUs: the only solution to the problem is upgrading the CPUs.

To quote the KB article:

"The issue affects the following processors:
x86 Family 6 Model 1 Stepping X GenuineIntel (where X = 1, 2, 6, 7, or 9)
x86 Family 6 Model 3 Stepping X GenuineIntel (where X = 3 or 4)"

See the MS article here:

Sorry it didn't work for you... I confirmed that it worked on a 5500, 6500 and 1850r..

Re: Multiple CPU detection in Windows Server 2003

Sunil, yes they do, thanks anyway, am sure I'll have more questions :-)

Alicia, thanks for the info, didn't know that. Welll I have 4 PPro200' with 1MB cache on the way, so I'll try them and let you know.

Stephen, as Alicia pointed out, it might be that !?

Yes

I don't know of a workaround for the article Alica mentioned.
