Re: Noise problem DL360 G3

I updated the ROM but the server did not quite down. How do I check that the health driver is installed? Or where do I install the health driver from?

Thanks

Here is the link for the DL360 G3 with Win NT updates: http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/locate/7_4764.html

Here is the DL360G2 with win2k updates:

You need to download and install the First thing: Software - Support Pack

Re: Noise problem DL360 G3

I install the support pack and it is still no quieter. I call Compaq for support and they said there will be another ROM/BIOS update that should fix it, but they could not give me a date. Can anyone confirm that there is another update coming or did I just talk to someone misinformed?

Thanks

Re: Noise problem DL360 G3

Hi

Just wanted to share my experience

Also encountered the issue which wasn't solved by latest ROM

I also had to upgrade to CSP 6.20 ( for NT and W2K )

I also had to do a Clear Nvram

Pb fixed

Re: Noise problem DL360 G3

Finally--a solution!!! Hope it makes some others as happy as it did us!

This is not posted in the support page for the DL360G3 yet, but it works. Pull SP23886 from ftp.compaq.com. Shut down the server, and put maintenance switch S3 to the "off" position (marked as reserved). Install this softpaq updates the ROM to 3/19/03), and reboot. As soon as the health agent loads, the fans return to a normal (non-deafening) level.

thank you....

it's like having a baby with collic in our server room this constant drone of white noise wailing in the background. applying the rompaq now.

Re: Noise problem DL360 G3

For those of you who have done something to solve this problem, how much quieter are the fans now? Is it a little quieter, or typical-PC-under-the-desk quiet?

I'm having the same problem with the DL320 (and I'm off to start a new thread).

Thanks,
Jim

Re: Noise problem DL360 G3

The difference for us was night and day. With the fans running at full speed, you couldn't even stand at the server rack and talk on the phone at the same time. With the patch, it is much more quiet. It isn't "pc under the desk" quiet, but not too far off from that in a temperature controlled room.

Re: Noise problem DL360 G3

Is there a known fix for a DL320 G2?
I updated the rom to p026, update smartstart to 6.20 but still a terrible noise.
Somebody knows what to do or isn't there a patch/fix for the DL320 G2 yet ?

Re: Noise problem DL360 G3

Help!

I did all the above, and still no result.

My BIOS is 3/19/2003, applied Support Paq 6.2 (for W2K).

I Cleared Nvram, I tried changing the S3 jumper. Nothing helps.

Any more ideas?

Thanx.

Re: Noise problem DL360 G3

Geil,

Are you sure that the s3 jumper is fully in the "off" position? This disables hardware control of the fans. I know that on ours (mounted in the rack) it was difficult to get at this jumper because of equipment above.

Re: Noise problem DL360 G3

What's the temperature like in the environment the server is installed in?
The truth is out there, but I forgot the URL..

Re: Noise problem DL360 G3

Yes, the jumper is fully set to off. I did not install the server in a rack yet. The temperature in the room is 21 degrees Celcius.

Re: Noise problem DL360 G3

Even after we install the correct BIOS. We had to have the system board replaced to get the fans to quite down.

Re: Noise problem DL360 G3

I've just been speaking with HP and discovered that the fans, which are a lot noisier than previous Proliant models, are in fact running at their slower speed.
We proved this but placing a piece of card behind the fans to deflect the air and allow the CPU to warm up. Low and behold the fan speed increased to a very noisey level.
I'm still not very happy with the level of noise but as HP say they are designed for rack mounting within a computer room and people should not work in computer rooms!!

Re: Noise problem DL360 G3

Hi there,

This is strange: the reduction of the noise only kicked in after flashing the bios 5 times!

The DL360 is still our most moisy server, but the noise level is acceptable now.

Re: Noise problem DL360 G3

This is by design - I had this issue raised by a customer and to prove that the health driver was in fact working and controlling the fan in the proper fashion I use a program called heavy load to get the server to increase in temperature. The fans increased in speed as the server got hotter and then slow as it got cooler . So there is not a problem with the fans at all. Had this confirmed with HP

Re: Noise problem DL360 G3

Oh dear, such a lot of solutions. We tried it at all. Switch S3 to off. Latest bios applied. No effect. Temperature in the serevr room is ca.21 degrees celsius. Good is that the server have screws to mount it at the rack - otherwise I think it could fly away because of the fans. Same problems exist at a DL380G3 server.
Does anyone knows more about the heavy load of a driver?

Re: Noise problem DL360 G3

I think you will find that the fans are running at their "slow" speed in the conditions you state. I know they are very loud.

The easiest way to prove this is to remove the lid and put a piece of card between the fans and the CPU. It may take some time so be patient but the cpu will heat up and thereby increase the fan speed. HP will obviously not advise that you do this in case you overheat your CPU. It does need to get quite warm but not to the extent that you cannot bear your hand on it, so be careful.

Re: Noise problem DL360 G3

Colin, thx for the response. We tested it alredy with a technican from HP. Fans should gear high at power on and the just gear down. They don't do that. As I said...adding some wings at the DL380 and it could fly. Andreas

Re: Noise problem DL360 G3

We had the same problem. It was only after setting the dipswitch and patching the bios, that we found our fans WERE at normal speed before, cause they started blowing full blast after that. Good thing we have a datacentre 30 km. away from us :)

Re: Noise problem DL360 G3

So What do i do now ?

Flashing Bios 5 times, Set Jumper and pray for silence ??

Our Server room is airco cooled @ 24 degrees. Because we got 20 server extra the last year. Now we only need a better airco.??

Is this temp to high for:

4 * DL380 G3
1 * SAN 1000 + 2 DriveCabs
7 * DL360 G3
12* ML370 G1
4 * ML350 G2/G3
1 * 3000
2 * DL360 G2

8 * 3000 VA UPS old model
7 * 3000 XR

1 * Cisco 4006
1 * Cisco PIX
1 * Cisco VPN Concentrator

What is the ideal temp for a serverroom ?

Re: Noise problem DL360 G3

Installed the latest BIOS:
ProLiant DL360 G3 ROM P31 (01/28/2004)
Added support to allow the system to run quieter at normal operating temperatures

Still that irritating Noise :-((

Re: Noise problem DL360 G3

We have servers like this and when we replace the fans that are noisy (abnormally)and the new units from HP have an additional lead on them, this lead introduces a resistor that might be preventing fan noise you are experiancing. Perhaps you should give it a try as it has helped our issue.
