Re: P440AR DOES NOT SUPPORT HGST DRIVES FOR RAID CONFIGURATION ON DL 380GEN 9

Hello @khaifrost,

To set up RAID on your DL380 Gen9 with the P440ar controller and HGST SAS drives, start by ensuring that the controller is running in RAID mode, not HBA mode. You can verify this by pressing F9 during boot to enter System Utilities, then navigating to System Configuration >> Smart Storage Configuration >> Controller Settings and selecting RAID mode if necessary.

Next, confirm that your HGST drives are recognized — they should appear in the list of available drives even if the system flags them as “non-HPE.” Once verified, go back into System Utilities, open the HPE Smart Array Configuration Utility, choose the P440ar controller, and select Create Array. From there, highlight the HGST drives you want to use and choose the appropriate RAID level (RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, or 10) depending on your performance and redundancy needs, then save and exit. Alternatively, you can press F10 at boot to enter Intelligent Provisioning, open the Array Configuration Utility, and create your logical drive before installing your operating system, or use the HPE Smart Storage Administrator (SSA) inside the OS to configure RAID afterward.

It’s highly recommended to update your P440ar firmware, along with the server BIOS and iLO firmware, using the HPE Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) before setup to ensure full compatibility with non-HPE drives. Finally, avoid mixing SAS and SATA drives or using drives with different capacities or speeds in the same array, as this can affect performance and reliability. Following these steps will allow your P440ar controller to successfully detect and configure RAID for your HGST SAS drives on the DL380 Gen9.
