I have an (old?) Proliant 1600 running Windows Server 2003 (yes, it's true - 2x PII450) and I'm getting strange behavior (media incorrectly identified) from both tape drives, one connected to each of the two Symbios Logic 53C875 controllers on the system.
The SCSI controllers appear in device mangler as 'Compaq 32-But Ultra SCSI Controller /P' which seems wierd as the Compaq Diagnostics show them as 'Symbios Logic 53C875 Ultra-Wide SCSI'.
There's an updated driver listed as 'HP ProLiant 32-Bit SCSI Controller Driver for Windows 2000/Server 2003' at http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/locate/20_1126.html#22 which I plan to try tonight. Is this the right one to use? Will it perhaps fix the issues with the tape drives? Is there a driver available somewhere that is more specifically for the 'Symbios Logic 53C875 Ultra-Wide SCSI' controller?
In case it might be a problem with the tape drivers, here's that info (as listed in device mangler):
EXABYTE EXB-85058SQANXR1 SCSI Sequential Device
(external, using Microsoft driver)
Compaq DDS3 12/24 GB DAT Drive
(internal, using Microsoft driver)
It should likely be mentioned that both tape drives worked correctly under Windows 2000 Server.
Thanks!

Re: Proliant 1600 - Symbios Logic 53C875 - Which Driver?
It might not be a driver problem though, the 8505 is not LVD!

I'll give the other driver a try tonight.
One question: LVD? (I don't recognize that acronym)

SolutionTermination is important so make sure it's good. I've found that some operating systems are not fussy at all and others are very fussy on the Proliant 1600.
If you do have problems with the Microsoft tape drivers then try the Compaq ones (at least for the 12/24Gb DAT drive)from here.
This runs from 2000/2003 and scans the buses for attached HP/Compaq tape drives, then loads the appropriate driver.

Hope this helps,
Brian

Re: Proliant 1600 - Symbios Logic 53C875 - Which Driver?
I'm using the latest drivers for all the related hardware (SCSI Controller, Tape Drives) and I'm still having the problem. I've even went so far as to dismantle the server and the tape drives a clean them of dust (that was a bunch, yuk).
So there must be a termination problem I suppose, though I have no idea how to fix it...
