Proliant 5000 memory upgrade troubles

I am trying to upgrade the memory on my Proliant 5000 server and it is not co-operating. Whenever I add memory to the current 512M that is installed (228470-001 kit) I get a "207 - Invalid Memory Configuration" error on POST. I have tried several different memory combinations, but none seem to be working when used in conjunction with the current kit that is installed. All the memory that I am adding has been tested individually and is known to work, and is all original Compaq RAM. Following is a list of combinations I have tried, and the results I have received...

Original Configuration:
Bank 1 - 228470-001 (512M)
Bank 2 - Empty
Bank 3 - Empty
Bank 4 - Empty
System Detects 512M, works fine

Test #1:
Bank 1 - 228470-001 (512M)
Bank 2 - 228468-001 (128M)
Bank 3 - 228468-001 (128M)
Bank 4 - Empty
System Detects 768M, 207 Error on POST

Test #2:
Bank 1 - 228470-001 (512M)
Bank 2 - 228469-001 (256M)
Bank 3 - Empty
Bank 4 - Empty
System Detects 768M, 207 Error on POST

Test #3:
Bank 1 - 228470-001 (512M)
Bank 2 - 228469-001 (256M)
Bank 3 - 228469-001 (256M)
Bank 4 - Empty
System Detects 1024M, 207 Error on Post

Test #4:
Bank 1 - 228469-001 (256M)
Bank 2 - 228469-001 (256M)
Bank 3 - 228468-001 (128M)
Bank 4 - 228468-001 (128M)
System Detects 768M, works fine

Can anyone tell me if there is a problem with using smaller DIMMS with the 228470 kit? Or perhaps point me to a list of valid memory configurations for this machine? I'd like to take this server to at least 1G of memory, but don't want to shell out for another memory kit only to find out it won't work in it either.

System = Proliant 5000, 4x 200/512, BIOS E16(04/30/1999), 512M EDO

Re: Proliant 5000 memory upgrade troubles

Hi

Have you tried to run the SCU (System Configuration Utility) either from the Systempartition or a boot disk?

Re: Proliant 5000 memory upgrade troubles

SCU cannot be accessed when the 207 error happens as the system goes into a halted state. Exact error message on boot would be....

1048576 KB Detected

Compaq System BIOS - E16 (04/30/1999)

207 - Invalid Memory Configuration - Check DIMM Installation
System Halted

And the system refuses to take any input after that point.

Upgrade Requirement Any four matched DIMMs
NOTE: The ProLiant 5000 Server must add system RAM in sets of four DIMMs at a time, two on each memory
expansion board. The four DIMMs in a set must be the same size and speed. DIMM modules must be 60-ns or
faster. Use Compaq DIMMs or JEDEC-compliant DIMMs that conform to this parity scheme only.

5000 use interleave two for memory, you need to add them accordly to the memory scheme

Re: Proliant 5000 memory upgrade troubles

Thanks Mario.

I had looked through the service manual previously and saw the example configurations. I was hoping someone could point me to a full listing of valid configurations so that I could be certain any memory I purchase would be usable. I have been through all possible combinations of all the DIMMs I currently have on hand, and it looks like the best combination I can use presently is Test #4 above. Since the service manual lists 1536M (512M + 512M + 256M + 256M) as a valid combination, I'll take a chance and purchase another 228470-001 kit (512M) and shoot for that combination. I'm sure I can always unload the left over DIMMs on eBay.
