ProLiant BL460c Gen10 Smart Array - Logical Drive Not recognized

Hello,

First time posting on this forum.
We are testing this blade (product id: 863442-B21) on our c7000 enclosures.
We are using 2x sata-ssd ata vk000240GZXRU 240GB drives.
We also updated the ILO5 to version 2.99 and the System Rom to version I41 v3.00 10/19/2023.

We configure the array with raid1 using the default settings and then mount the rocky linux 9 iso, but cannot run through the installer because it believes that there is a "Duplicate UUID" for sda/sdb. Which tells me that it does not recognize it as a single logical drive. With gen8/gen9 we only see one logical drive (raid1) and install the OS without any issues on that one logical drive.

If i delete the array, mount arch linux iso and format each of the drives (changing the UUID on each drive), I am able to go through the rocky9 installation without any issue but without raid1. Unfortunately, I cannot boot into the hard drives only until i disable the "Embedded SATA configuration" and set it to "Sata ahci support".

What could be the reason as to why I cannot see the logical drive on gen10 but on gen8/9 i dont see this behavior? Some missing driver?

Please let me know if you need more information.

Best,
Dave

Hello,

You try installing the Smart Array Controller for Red Hat Enterprise while installing the operating system and see if the issue is resolved.

HPE ProLiant Gen10 and Gen10Plus Smart Array Controller Driver.

Betreff: ProLiant BL460c Gen10 Smart Array - Logical Drive Not recognized

I hope you did not forget to make a logical drive... Recently a colleague made the mistake to create an array but he forgot to make a logical drive too. Check Smart Array Manager if you see a logical drive with correct size and RAID-1.

Next problem could be (like with MS-Windows) that the driver for the array controller is missing on your installation image.

It is a bit strange that your system is complaining about duplicate drives. If the RAID is set up properly, you should see ONE drive and if the driver is missing you should see no drive.

Re: ProLiant BL460c Gen10 Smart Array - Logical Drive Not recognized

Thank you for the reply.

I tried installing the driver POST os installation just to see it, but i cannot install it.

[root@localhost ~]# rpm -ivh kmod-smartpqi-2.1.16-030.rhel8u4.x86_64.rpm
warning: kmod-smartpqi-2.1.16-030.rhel8u4.x86_64.rpm: Header V3 RSA/SHA256 Signature, key ID 26c2b797: NOKEY

I noticed that the driver is for rhel8 not rhel9... so i installed rocky linux 8 on the gen10 blade instead just to test this, but cannot seem to proceed. Any chance a rhel9 version will be released as well ?

Any input as to how to proceed is appreciated.

Thank you,
Dave

Re: ProLiant BL460c Gen10 Smart Array - Logical Drive Not recognized

Ok, it looks like I cannot access the Intelligent Provisioning UI, neither during POST (F10) nor under System Utilities (F9) under "Embedded Application > Intelligent Provisioning"

Regarding the Logical Drive, last image shows the settings I use, I'm guessing that's creating the Logical Drive. I will note that this was under System Utilities (F9), when i created the RAID1 array... not under the Smart Array Controller (F10). It is here that the OS installer (rocky linux9) complains of the Duplicate UUID.

Why can I not access the Smart Array Controller?

Re: ProLiant BL460c Gen10 Smart Array - Logical Drive Not recognized

I also tried installing the Gen10 Service Pack for ProLiant v2023.03.00.00 to see if it's a firmware/software issue but get this warning... not sure if to proceed

2023-11-29_13-35.png

EDIT:

i did proceed but still no change, cannot access the Smart Array Controller Manager. Which probably means i have not configured a logical drive.
not sure what the issue is...

EDIT2:

i installed the Intelligent Provisioning Recovery Media for Gen10 and Gen10 Plus version 3.85 and now I can access Inteligent Provisioning menu (F10).
Let's see if i can create the logical drive.

Re: ProLiant BL460c Gen10 Smart Array - Logical Drive Not recognized

Not sure if its going to work.

I created the Logical Drive with the Smart Array Controller.

But still dont see the logical drive

2023-11-29_15-37.png

I went ahead and installed the OS of sda to see what would happen and was not able to boot . Im going to guess if i enable "Sata ahci support" it will boot...

Re: ProLiant BL460c Gen10 Smart Array - Logical Drive Not recognized

Just to update:

we found the issue.

We needed to add a HPE Smart Array P204i-B SR 12 Gen 10 W16 HPE 877972-001 controller which was not part of the purchase.... *sigh*

All is well now.
