I have an old Proliant DL160 Gen8 and I've seen one of the HDD leds blinking orange.
With the iLO 4 I see the Storage degraded in the Health Summary and this is what I can read:
Controller on Slot 2
Controller Status OK
Serial Number confidential info erased
Model Smart Array P420 Controller
Firmware Version 8.32
Controller Type HPE Smart Array
Cache Module Status OK
Cache Module Serial Number confidential info erased
Cache Module Memory 1048576 KB
Drive Enclosure Port 1I Box 1
Status OK
Drive Bays 4
Logical Drive 01
Status Degraded
Capacity 931 GiB
Fault Tolerance RAID 1/RAID 1+0
Logical Drive Type Data LUN
Encryption Status Not Encrypted
Physical Drive in Port 1I Box 1 Bay 1
Status OK
Serial Number confidential info erased
Model ST31000424SS
Media Type HDD
Capacity 1000 GB
Location Port 1I Box 1 Bay 1
Firmware Version BC26
Drive Configuration Configured
Encryption Status Not Encrypted
Physical Drive in Port 1I Box 1 Bay 2
Status Degraded (Predictive failure)
Serial Number confidential info erased
Model ST31000424SS
Media Type HDD
Capacity 1000 GB
Location Port 1I Box 1 Bay 2
Firmware Version BC26
Drive Configuration Configured
Encryption Status Not Encrypted
There is a RAID 1 with n. 2 1TB HD using a Smart Array P420 Controller.
I'm ordering a new 1TB ST31000424SS HD then I'll turn off the server before subsitututing the degraded HD: is it correct?
Thank you so much,
Francesco

SolutionHi
according to this document you can replace it online :https://support.hpe.com/hpesc/public/docDisplay?docId=kc0117321en_us&docLocale=en_US
but if you choose to shutdown the server, i would
* remove the failing disk
* power on the server
* after complete boot, put in the new HDD

Hi,
You can replace the hard drive online ,when the server is running .
Refer the document -https://support.hpe.com/hpesc/public/docDisplay?cc=jp&docId=mmr_kc-0117321&lang=ja-jp

Re: ProLiant DL160 Gen8 - Storage degraded
Hi Richard
I followed your instruction and the HDD seems to rebuild correctly.
I found the RAID degraded this morning: the status of the HDD is "Degraded (Not authenticated)" in the ILO and "281 - 1 TB SAS HDD at Port 1I : Box 1 : Bay 2 could not be authenticated as a genuine HPE drive. The Smart RAID/HBA controller will not control the LEDs to this drive. " in the SSA.
"Physical Drive (1 TB SAS HDD) 1I:1:2 Authentication on this drive carrier failed due to a communication error. This may not be an authentic HPE carrier. I/O operations to the device will not be affected, but the Smart RAID/HBA controller will not control the LEDs to this device."
Where is the problem?
I subsituted the HDD with the same exact model...

Re: ProLiant DL160 Gen8 - Storage degraded
I turned off the server, unplug the power, unmount the driver and mount it again, turn on again the server and the error disappeared!
Probably I mounted the caddy wrongly the first time...

Re: ProLiant DL160 Gen8 - Storage degraded
Hi Frenky,
I have seen this behaviour more. it is not a problem. the drive will function correctly.
Maybe it is good to check the firmware, are they the same for both drives ?
