Proliant ML310 Embedded SATA Controller Problems

We bought two of these servers with SCSI drives. We decided to use the drives in one machine and buy SATA drives and use the embedded SATA RAID on the other using RAID1.

I removed the SCSI controller and changed the BIOS to use the embedded SATA controller. I go into the SATA array setup and it doesn't detect my drives.

I bought the proprietary SATA fan cable. These are new drives and I tried it in both servers with the same results.

Please help. Thanks.

Hello Scott,

Could you post the links to both the server models if you bought it from a reseller/distributor?

Something like this,i would want to check,

Re: Proliant ML310 Embedded SATA Controller Problems

Hi Scott,

The cable to connect the drives is different from the normal cable, and I suspect they don't come with the SCSI models.

Can you confirm the cable has the part number 389653-B21, please? If not, then it would be unlikely to work.

Gus

Re: Proliant ML310 Embedded SATA Controller Problems

We did indeed purchase the SATA fan cable, part number 389653-B21. Here's the link to that: http://www.pcconnection.com/Search?Id=20&Term=389653-B21&Offset=0&DefSort=Y&om=search

One thing I should clarify is that the new SATA drives that I purchased were not from HP. I picked them up at a local retailer. The only thing that I could think of is that these servers only work with proprietary HP hard drives. I truly hope that this isn't the case but it seems like the most likely reason.

Thanks again for all help given.

Re: Proliant ML310 Embedded SATA Controller Problems

They must have run out of stock or something. Here is a similar one. The only thing different is the processor speed. http://www.pcconnection.com/Search?Term=394320-001&Offset=0&DefSort=Y&om=search

Re: Proliant ML310 Embedded SATA Controller Problems

As per the link,it seems to be a Scsi model.

Re: Proliant ML310 Embedded SATA Controller Problems

Yes it is the SCSI model. As I stated in the opening post, we removed the SCSI controller card and are trying to use the embedded SATA RAID controller.

Re: Proliant ML310 Embedded SATA Controller Problems

Afaik, only the controller replacement is'nt sufficient.
I think the drive cage and a backplane if it exists should be changed.

Re: Proliant ML310 Embedded SATA Controller Problems

The backplane was removed. We are using the NON hot-swap configuration so we don't need the SATA or SAS backplane. We've kept the cage because we are using old SCSI drive enclosures with our SATA hard drives. Works like a charm.

Again, the SATA RAID setup program is not finding the drives. The only thing I can think of is that only HP hard drives are useable. There are no DIP switches or jumpers on the motherboard and/or hard drives to make this possible. I just wanted to confirm this for my own peace of mind.

Re: Proliant ML310 Embedded SATA Controller Problems

Well, i have seen a instance or two where a couple guys have successfully used non hp disks.
Try a single disk directly connected to the sata controller without any external storage.

Scott,

Have a look at this link.

http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/12364_div/12364_div.html

Search for "Use of the embedded SATA RAID feature requires installation of a driver from a floppy drive".

Did you try this --> http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/25280.html
