"Non-System disk or disk error. replace and strike any key when ready" Not able to start system up,

I have a ProLiant ML330 G3 Server series product 317821-002
and I have an issue with the system, when I load up SmartStart 7.8 it goes through and see's the hard drive and then loads the software and asks for the CD and then loads the CD and then reboots, when it reboots, the computer does NOT see anything! I tried this with a SATA drive / controller, and that didn't seem to help it either. I am not sure what to do. It says Non system disk. There is NOT any floppy drive as I removed it and the disk should be booting. I am not sure what to check as I tried different hardware. I took the hard drive off and it noticed that there was NO hard drive in SmartStart, but I don't know what else to do. I also tried to install Windows Server 2003 and Windows Vista, ANYTHING to try to have it be seen, by SOMETHING, but I had trouble. Anything I can do to try to get this to work?

Re: "Non-System disk or disk error. replace and strike any key when ready" Not able to start system up,

Hello Matthew,

1) How many Hard Drives do u have ?
2) What RAID ?

If RAID, is enabled, is it configured ?

As you explained, Its the OS CD which DOES NOT see the HDD on reboot;

I think, this has to do with the raid Configuration or the RAID Drivers.

Regards,
James.

Re: "Non-System disk or disk error. replace and strike any key when ready" Not able to start system up,

First I tried one SCSI (it came with a controller) and one disk, then I took that out and put in a SATA drive card, able to have 2 cards for RAID1, but I only put one card or sata drive on and tried to run it, I wanted to keep it all simple.
I put in the PATA drive last connecting the IDE bus and removing the SATA drive hardware.

I am not sure about the BIOS but I will look, I would believe that with NOTHING in it, no USB, no floppy, it would boot to the cd (which I removed) or the hard disk, the only thing left. Even if I left the OS CD in, it won't automatically start unless there is nothing on the hard disk, which there SHOULD be. I took a brand new IDE drive (PATA) out of the box and tried it, strange.

Re: "Non-System disk or disk error. replace and strike any key when ready" Not able to start system up,

SCSI Model using optional SCSI hard drives, total capacity 512 GB (3 x 72.8 GB non-hot-plug + 2 x 146.8 GB hot plug) using 3 internal drive bays and optional 2 bay hot plug drive cage. (244509-B21)

You may have an incorrect jumper setting..

Go to page 56 of this guide to see how to configure non hot plug drives:

Re: "Non-System disk or disk error. replace and strike any key when ready" Not able to start system up,

SOunds to me that the wrong drivers are being loaded and the controllers are not recognized at boot. THe IDE might nont work because the onboard ide controller does not fully support hard drives (by design). the other controllers I would try loading a driver manually at OS install, downloaded from HP Support and give up on the SmartStart.

Re: "Non-System disk or disk error. replace and strike any key when ready" Not able to start system up,

I updated the BIOS to the latest version, the year was / is 2005, and I did NOT alter or change any of the settings in the BIOS. It updated and I rebooted and put all the original hardware BACK into the computer. So now it has the original (I believe this is the drive I have) 32GB Wide Ultra3 SCSI hard drive - 10,000 RPM, 3.5-inch form factor, 1.0-inch high, and I believe I have HP ProLiant 64-Bit/133-MHz Single and Dual Channel Ultra320 Adapters for Windows Server 2003. Regardless, I put the original ones in. I have the updated BIOS installed and I power on the unit, it sees in SmartStart 7.80 that I have a hard drive and I select to install. I install the software and put in the CD Key for Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition x32 and put in the CD and it takes the files. It then reboots as it normally would and then goes to load the O.S.! If I physically take the CD out, it gives me the original error "Non-System Disk..." If I go to run the Server 2003 and install from there, it says 4GB is available and the other 32GB or so are there to be configured. I am not sure what would NOT allow the software to load and then start. I moved the controller but that didn't seem to matter. I do NOT know what to do.

Re: "Non-System disk or disk error. replace and strike any key when ready" Not able to start system up,

Make sure all connections are Ok and use the following driver in a slipstream CD

http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/17321.html

In order to make the slipstream CD go to www.nliteos.com

Re: "Non-System disk or disk error. replace and strike any key when ready" Not able to start system up,

I am not sure what the slipstream CD is going to do? I am not arguing, just curious. I feel confident that all connectios are secure and set, as they are exactly as they were before and the hardware is talking to the software as I can see the hard drive in the smartstart 7.8 cd when it loads and it reads the Server 2003 CD without a problem. I could understand when it starts if it were a problem, but it should not error out saying that there's nothing. I'd expect it to attempt to load and then error out.

Re: "Non-System disk or disk error. replace and strike any key when ready" Not able to start system up,

The slipstream cd will et you insert the driver like if it was part of the CD so you can install without SS.

SS cd has driver support for your controller but assisted installation.

You need to use normal installation thru nlite..
