ram not detected correctly

I got a Proliant 2500 from my brother. Now I want to install Linux to it. In fact the Server contains 256mb ram but Debian and SuSE both do only detect 15mb. If I tell the kernel there are 256mb it panics because the initrd fails to load. What is wrong here?

Bad memory?

Have you tried reseating the memory cards?

What order are the memory cards in?

Re: ram not detected correctly

The bios recognizes them correctly as 256mb. Memtest-86 also told me there are 256mb and did not show up with any error yet.
So it looks like if just Linux couldn't figure out the correct ram size...

Re: ram not detected correctly

Sebastian;

Are you telling it there's 256 MB via the mem= directive at the boot prompt?

I don't know about Debian, or SuSE, but both RedHat and Mandrake were happy with the mem= directive, when I installed on my 1500.

Re: ram not detected correctly

Yes did that but SuSe was not happy with it.
Have to try again with debian...
