RTX 3090 inside a DL380 Gen10

I'm considering getting a (used) ASUS Turbo RTX 3090-24G and installing it in my DL380 G10 12LFF. I'm aware this card is not officially supported, and my experiment might fail, but I'm still eager to see if it will work. There are a couple of general questions, though:

My DL380 came with the riser card 87746-001 preinstalled (it could be the FIO GPU Riser Kit P14373-B21).  It looks pretty much like the 3090 could fit in there. (Should I use a different riser card/kit?) However, the GPU has two 8-pin PCIe power inlets.
The riser has only one 8-pin socket, though. There's a cable kit 871830-B21, but I'm not sure this is the right one because it has an 8-pin and a 6-pin connector on the card side. (Can you enlighten me on that?) Is there another cable kit?

Moreover, I'm somewhat unsure whether that 8-pin socket on the riser card will output a sufficient wattage. The card's TDP is 350W, which is well within the range of other cards on the list of officially supported GPUs for the DL380G10. How is a GPU with a high power demand supposed to be supplied in this server?

What else do I have to consider regarding installing a GPU?

Thank you very much!

Hi @servertom ,
Firstly, we will recommend or support the devices that are officially supported by HPE.
As per the quickspecs and the forum post, HPE DL380 Gen10 Server won't support R3090 and only some NVidea GPUs models are supported.
Lastly, this post may help you understand more.
Please let me know if any more details required, click on kudos and mark my reply as 'Accepted solution' if it helped to understand.

Re: RTX 3090 inside a DL380 Gen10

Hey shiva_jr,

I've read through both forum posts and have also had a look at the quickspecs. The posts discuss different cards and do not even mention the RTX 3090, and the quickspecs list only a few very high-end *officially supported* cards (presumably because they've been tested by HP). As I said, I'm aware the 3090 isn't found on any list so it will be an experiment.

Your answer confuses and worries me a little bit since you give me the impression there might be a technical incompatibility. Like if the CPU or the GPU lacking some required feature to play with each other, or the BIOS being generally incompatible with every GPU it doesn't explicitly know or something like that...  Can you explain in detail why you think the 3090 won't work on this server?

@servertom

So an interesting experiment! The ASUS Turbo RTX 3090-24G in an HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 is definitely not officially supported, but with the right power and cooling setup, it might work.

There is a risk as well, power delivery from the riser may not be sufficient; you may need custom cabling.

Make sure system has enough airflow and a PSU with sufficient headroom.

Let me know how it goes.
