Should you wait for Logical Drive to finish transforming when Extending.
We have a Apollo 4200 w/ Smart Array P816i-a SR Gen 10.
This server is not yet in production and our plan is to have the follwoing conifguration.
All 24 disk (16Tib each) set to 1 Array RAID6 and a total of 8 Logical Drives each starting at 30TiB.
These Logical Drives will need to be increaded in the future (will be holding video data for 8 seperate VMs).
So my question is when we extend a Logical Drive should we wait untill the Transforming process is complete before rebooting server and getting back to prodcution?
What has your experince been with how long it has taken to complete?
If you can reboot and get back to productions how will the transforming process impact producitivity?
Thanks

Re: Should you wait for Logical Drive to finish transforming when Extending.
Hello,
Only after the completion of the logical drive expansion would the array be extended over the expanded capacity. If the process is not complete the additional space is not avaiable for performing the extension. Usually, at a time only once such transformation process could be performed at a time on the adaptor.

Re: Should you wait for Logical Drive to finish transforming when Extending.
@TVVJ Does it mean that one can reboot the server (in my case a DL360 G9)?
I don't intend to use the RAID 5 that I have expanded for any activity, only the SD card for installation..
Will the process continue in the background or is halted anytime?
What about shutdown?
Thank you.

Re: Should you wait for Logical Drive to finish transforming when Extending.
Hello,
If this RAID array is not needed any longer, you may delete the RAID array, create a new one and then use it. If the array is needed, then it is recommended to wait until the expand activity is completed and then perform other actions, Having full data back up is recommended.

Re: Should you wait for Logical Drive to finish transforming when Extending.
I was told by some experts that I can use it with performance degradation
as write operation is slower.
I waited for it, now it's not a question anymore, but would be nice to
clearly understand.
If I need to only install an OS from USB to another USB drive, SD card,
perhaps another logical drive, could I reboot the system to do it? I
wouldn't access the logical drive in being extended or adding a drive to
tye array.
Thanks again for your help.
