Smart Storage Battery FAILED, SSA Cache battery showing OK?

Hi,

I have a DL360 Gen9 (yes, I know it's quite old and out of support, but still . . . .) wiith a P440ra RAID controller installed (the BIOS and RAID controller have the latest firmware installed).

The Smart Storage Battery failed, but the Smort Storage Administrator status still showed the cache battery status as OK and write caching was still enabled. That does not seem right, surely the write cache should have been marked as disabled if the SSB was failed?

I have replaced the Smart Storage Battery and it is now showing OK, but I am concerned that if/when the battery fails again, the write cache will not be disabled, potentially leading to data loss should the server lose power.

Can anyone offer any advice on this one please?

regards

Dave

Hi,

Physical drive write cache is not battery-backed, you could lose data if a power failure occurs during a write process.

Refer Smart Storage Administrator User Guide

This answer is irellevant.

I am not taking about the physical drive write cache, the questions is about the RAID controller cache

Hi,

If the smart storage battery failed and it was showing OK in SSA and the cache is not disabled, this may be the reporting issue

You may need to use the latest smart storage administrator utility or HP Smart Storage Administrator CLI (HP SSACLI) and check for the correct status and also make sure to update the smart array controller firmware to the latest version.

Re: Smart Storage Battery FAILED, SSA Cache battery showing OK?

Hi,

thanks for that reply. The Array Controller firmware is up to date and I am using the latest version of the SSA GUI for a DL360 Gen9.

I don't have the CLI version of SSA insatalled, but can do so if it will help.

Is the CLI vesrion likely to reveal other information than the GUI version can't?

Ans if, so, what command(s) would be needed to expose that information?

Re: Smart Storage Battery FAILED, SSA Cache battery showing OK?

1. Open HPE Smart Storage Administrator (SSA)
2. Open the Configure panel by doing one of the following:
○ Choose a device and click Configure in the quick navigation menu
○ Select an available device from the Home screen, and then click Configure
under the available options
3. Select Cache Manager from the Tools menu
4. Click Controller Cache in the Cache Manager menu
5. Click Modify Caching Settings
6. Select disable in Enable Write cache when battery/capacitor not present

I hope this will solve your issue
