storage / controller . windows server storage spaces direct

Here is a white paper published by hp on Implementing Windows Server 2016 Software Defined Storage using HPE ProLiant Servers, Storage, and Options.

On this document it is mentioned that in order to implement s2d in standard hyper-converged solution the recommended storage controllers (page 8) are :

HPE H240 12Gb 2-ports Internal Smart Host Bus Adapter        part number : 726907-B21

and

HPE H240ar 12Gb 2-ports Internal Smart Host Bus Adapter      part number :  749976-B21

but the recommended storage controllers are applicable in case of using jbods.

At microsoft ignite confernce it is shown that servers can leverage internal storage without need to jbods or anthing else.

So my question here is that even in case of not using jbods do i still need storage controller on dl380 gen9?

and if the answer is yes why do i need one ? and what would be the recommended storage controller?

do i still need two seprate storage controllers?

can i compeletly not using any storage controlles?

"So my question here is that even in case of not using jbods do i still need storage controller on dl380 gen9?" well if you don't have any controller in your server what would control your in chassis hard drives?

DL380 Gen9 always has the B140i dynamic smart array controller built-in, but you can also install optional adapters (for the internal disks) - see quickspec for your server.

Storage Controller

One of the following depending on model

Entry Models

HPE Dynamic Smart Array B140i Controller

NOTE: The embedded B140i controller will operate in UEFI only mode. For legacy support an additional controller will be needed, and for CTO orders please also select the Legacy mode settings part, 758959-B22.

NOTE: The B140i defaults to AHCI off the chipset. Smart array needs to be enables on the SATA only models if required.

NOTE: The B140i will not operate in Legacy mode.

Base Models

HPE Dynamic Smart Array B140i Controller

HPE Flexible Smart Array P440ar/2G FIO Controller

HPE Flexible Smart Array P840/4G FIO Controller

HPE Smart Array P840ar/2G Controller

Performance Models

HPE Dynamic Smart Array B140i Controller

HPE Flexible Smart Array P440ar/2GB

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: storage / controller . windows server storage spaces direct

I have looked at this before.  Our cards are not on there.  We were sold the solution back in february have only just got round to commissioning and fully testing so we have no come back really from HP.  We are stuck with it.

Thats why im trying to find if anyone else has used these cards or any particular settings to try/use?
