USB booted SPP errors "You need to install the kernel first" but works from virtual CD
Hi,
I have DL380 Gen10 with ESXI 7.0.3 and was installing a critical firmware update in offline mode. I created a USB P64606_001_gen10spp-2023.09.00.00-SPP2023090000.2023_0902.19.iso using usbkey.exe. I also made the iso accessible via http if needed.
I booted to system utilities and chose a one-time boot from USB. It booted successfully. I landed on screen to choose between Automatic and Interactve. After chooseing Inaractive I got an error referencing vmlinuz, saying it needed to load the kernel first.
But, the same iso, when booted from a virtual CD-ROM, worked. This has left me in sort of linbo with HP because my immediate issue is resolved (I was able to successfully install the firmware patch albeit byt a different method tahn I wanted) but I would rather use a USB to do so (for performance and to prevent network glitch from scrambling my updates). HP says they're willing to call me about it, but without rebooting my server to show them what happens (which I'd need to coordinate with my office and take a few important systems offline), I don't know what they could do for me.
So, I'm hoping someone else has had this problem, where the USB boots but when trying to choose an install method (interactive vs automatic) it says "You need to load the kernel first." I see a bunch of cfg files with paths to vmlinuz and maybe one of them is set wrong? I'm not sure. The USBKey utility doesn't give me a prompt saying how this image will be used and I'm wary of tinkering with the cfg files for future updates.
Thanks.

Hi jscooper22
Could you please re-download the SPP, i feel SPP file that you are using might be corrupted and that could be the reason it is not able to load the SPP kernel.
The link to GEN10 Latest SPP - SPP
Thanks and Regards,
Manoj.

Hello,
Did you also try the automatic update option?
It could be an issue with the SPP on USB.
Thanks.

Thanks. I did briefly think of that but was only looking to update one piece of firmware and didn't know if I'd get another confirmation prompt before proceeding.

Hello,
I understand. You might have to replicate the issue on the same or different server during a downtime to isolate further.
Thanks.

Re: USB booted SPP errors "You need to install the kernel first" but works from
I have the same issue with this current 2024.09.00.00 on a DL380 Gen10
No mater if I choose Automatic or interactive, still getting the /vmlinuz not found. I have downloaded it several times as it was suggested, and also use different memory sticks with the same results.
I tried the same iso as virtual CD/DVD and worked like a charm! Many thanks!
HPE Developers... should take a look at Dell's upgrading system. Straight from iDRAC, pretty easy to use, just 3 clicks!

For me the solution was to use a 32GB USB 2.0 disk
