What are Simplex / Duplex modes in Proliant3000?
Currently I have 3 Hot plug HDD in drive bay A. I want to insert another one, but I am confused which slot I can insert the new one it.
I read about Simplex and Duplex modes and drive cages having simplex and duplex configurations...... I am confused about these terminology. What is meant by simplex and duplex modes?
Can`t I just insert a hot plug drive into one of the available slots?
Any help much appreciated?

Re: What are Simplex / Duplex modes in Proliant3000?
Simplex and Duplex are meant for two different cages in PL3000. Surely you can install the drive in the same cage in any available slot. If you need assistance with this please do not hesitate to contact our Tech Support at 1-800-652-6672.

Re: What are Simplex / Duplex modes in Proliant3000?
The simplex cage has one SCSI connector (68 pin) and you can install up to 7 drives into it, they will be SCSI ID 0, 1 2, etc. up to ID 6. Even though it looks like you can install 4 drives on both sides, only 7 will work (SCSI limitation). So in a simplex cage you can have up to 7 drives connected to the same controller.
The duplex cage is split into two halfs and has two SCSI connectors (68 pin). One connects to up to 4 drives on one side of the cage, the other connects to up to 4 drives on the other side of the cage. So in a duplex cage you can connect up to 4 drives to each of two separate SCSI controllers

Re: What are Simplex / Duplex modes in Proliant3000?
My drive cage has a 2 * 4 configuration. There are some small diagrams on the side with various Simplex and Duplex configurations. So I am still confused on which type of drive cage I have. Because my Raid controller is dual channel, does that mean I have a duplex cage? How do I check what mode the Array controller is running?
BTW, I am using RAID5 on the 3 drives, but I want to install another single physical HDD that will not have any fault tolerance. It will be a separate logical drive.
Any info much appreciated.

Re: What are Simplex / Duplex modes in Proliant3000?
You should not overcomplicate things. Use the Smart array ciontroller to run a RAID array, use the SCSI ports on the system board to run a basic SCSI chain.
So if you want to have a single drive and a RAID array, put the drives for the array on one side of the cage and connect the connector on that side to one of the ports on the array controller, put the single drive in slot 0 on the other side of the cage and connect the connector for that side to one of the SCSI ports on the system board.
