What HAL do I use for dual CPU Proliant 2500

Hi, you very helpful people.

I have dual CPU Proliant 2500, which runs great. At start up it says it recognizes the two CPU's and all is fine. Bios is E24 12/01/99. However from my reading of these forums it seems that my windows 2000 professional is not using them both. I looked at a help page here and on Microsoft and it told me how to go to the device manager and make changes to the HAL to use two cpus. But there was this warning that if I did it wrong my computer may falter or stop???.

So what settings do I use safely and if I get it wrong how do I get going again?

I was given the following options in selecting device drivers.
Standard computer ??? acpi uni??? - acpi multi???acpi (pc)??? mps multi??? mps uni.. and standard pc.
Compaq ??? Compaq systempro multiprocessor or 100% compatible
Sgi ??? silicon graphics workstation.

Or do I need a different HAL?

My gut feeling is to go with the Compaq one??? but my gut feelings have got me in trouble before???

Go into Device Manager and under COMPUTER...If it says Uniprocessor then go to the DRIVER TAB and then choose UPDATE DRIVER, next....next....please make sure you choose the correct one. IF it says ACPI then use the same. If it says MPS then choose that one..
Go into the F10 partition and at the first window type CTRL A a dialogue box should appear asking about ADVANCED MODE. Hit ENTER. Choose SYSTEM CONFIG -> Config HW -> Review and Modify -> View and Edit Details. Hit PAGE DOWN twice and there you will see ADVANCED FEATURES. You will then see APIC MODE . Change that to Full table and then save and exit. Please keep me posted.

Two things when I go to my my device manager it says 'standard computer' under 'computer' not ACPI or MPS, it does give those options when I go further to 'display drivers' see above post.

Second, If I fire up my computer and go F10 to get to config hardware-> review or modify-> step3 review or edit-> I page down or look through the whole lot and do not see advanced. The only advanced I see is at the bottom (F7)I have not found anything about APIC mode.????

Once again I am sure this is easy, but not quite for newbie.

Ps. I also read of doing something so that if one CPU fails you have a way to boot to the good one???

Hope you can point me to the right spot for this. A lot of the links within the forum seem to be broken.

Hi Kelcott,
Here is a description of the different Hal. Don???t use the Compaq systemPro (those where for the very older and first server of Compaq (2500) is not a systemPro .
