Expanding Array

I have Compaq ML370 with a 431 Smart array controller with 2 arrays configure A=2x9.1 Gb (Raid 0+1) and B= 3x18.2Gb (Raid 5), running windows NT 4.0. I have added another 18.2 Gb drive to the server and expanded Array B to include the 18.2 Gb disk. It has completed the expand and in the ACU I am showing a total disk space of 54.4 Gb. However there is no size increase in windows. Disk manager is only reporting 36.4 Gb of total diskspace. Disk manager does not even report any unallocated diskspace. Help !!!

Re: Expanding Array

Darcy,

Under the ACU, I believe you also have to expand the logical drive by selecting "logical drive" and then on the right side click
on expand partition. WNT
should be able to then see the expansion in the partition.

Re: Expanding Array

I have done what you suggested but the ACU reports that there is no free space to expande the logical drive.

I am wondering if I can safely remove the disk from the array and try to re-add the disk back? Or does WNT require a reboot to recognize the resized partition?

Re: Expanding Array

Darcy,

I would reboot before trying to readd the drive again.

Re: Expanding Array

Are you viewing only the formatted space? The new space will need to be added to the system, as you can't add new space without formatting and giving the new space a drive letter.

Re: Expanding Array

Actually disk manager does not show any additional unallocated disk space at all.

I have attached a print screen of disk manager.

Re: Expanding Array

Have you rebooted since adding the drive? If not, try that to force a rescan of all the disks. If that doesn't work, I think you may be stuck. Also, I can't remember right now, but is the 431 controller capable of Advanced Data Guarding(ADG)? If so, make sure your array is set to Raid 5 and it didn't assume you wanted ADG. That could account for the failure to increase the size of the partition.
