Missing HDD
I have a NET Server LH PRO running WinNT Server 4.0, it has six HDD's installed. In WinNT disk config the last drive does not show up. The activity light is green and stays on all the time.
Server was installed and set up by someone else, think maybe this was a replacement drive.
What does green on all the time mean? How can I get NT to find the drive?

Re: Missing HDD
As long as the drive is functioning and the correct driver for the SCSI controller is loaded, NT should have no problems detecting the hard drive, so I think that there must be a problem with the drive itself. Also, the fact that the activity LED is lit up all the time indicates that the drive is not responding and might be bad.
Does the drive show up during POST when the SCSI controller banners? Is the drive "seen" in the SCSI controller setup utility? If the drive isn't seen by the controller, then it is not an NT issue, you have to troubleshoot the hardware (HDD, controller, cables)
If the drive is seen in the controller's setup utility, check the properties of the drive to see if there are any media errors on it.
Have you tried reseating the HDD? Sometimes, reseating a hotswap drive or reseating the cable connections on a common tray drive will resolve the problem of a non-responsive drive. When you reseat the drive or cable connections, take a look at the pins of the connectors to make sure there are no dust bunnies lurking about and that no pins are bent. Also, make sure the cables look good: no crimping, no exposed wires, etc.
Good luck,
Alicia

Re: Missing HDD
Hi,
Are these drives running off of a NetRAID card as part of an array? If so, it's possible that the 6th drive is set up as a hotspare. In this case, it would have a solid green power light on, but would not show up in NT 4.0. A hotspare is set up to kick in if one of the ither drives in the array fail.
