Windows 2000 won't boot after moving disks to different server.

Windows 2000 won't boot after moving disks to different server.

We tried to move a set of disks configured for Windows 2000 from a Proliant ML570 (where it was originally installed) to a 5500. When Windows 2000 starts on the 5500, it reboots and goes through post just prior to when the first GUI splash screen should appear. The same happens in VGA mode and safe mode. Both servers are dual CPU with 1 GB of memory, and the array controller recogizes the 4 logical drives. The 5500 runs fine with the original WIndows NT 4.0 setup. Does anyone have any ideas on what the problem is?

Hi,

don't you think the hardware is too different for just swapping disks?

greetings,

Michael

I think the 5500 is the predcessor to the ML570 (ours is a G1), and there seem to be few, if any differences except for CPU speed (500 Mhz vs 900 mhz).

What about the chipset? or the Smart Array controller?

Any Smart Array controller should recognize the disks, but the OS installed on those disks is not set up to use that SA Controller. (unless you pulled the SA as well).

If the chipset is different, which most likely it is, then Windows would have a tough time loading up and exhibit the problem you are witnessing.

Steven,

thanks for the support. This is what I had also in mind but wasn't sure to be right.
