restore vvol VM from Express Protect

Hi,

I have RMC-V running.  vvol VMs are on Nimble array.  Copy policy create snapshots every 8 hours and 1 Express Protect once a day to Storeonce.

I am testing out restoing an Express Protect copy to parent storage/volume on Nimble to overwrite existing vvol.  Steps I tried:

  1. power off the VM
  2. from RMC-V, select an older copy of Express, click restore
  3. restore started but failed with vvol has existing snapshots or access control records
  4. so from RMC-V, deleted all its snapshots copies
  5. repeated first 3 steps.  it failed again with same error.  see attached screenshot.

So what should I do to successfully do a restore?  Thanks.

Re: Query: restore vvol VM from Express Protect

@support_s is there a paricular procedure or solution you suggest from that document?  I looked and started at its page 121, the Restore to parent volume is basically what I tried to do.  But it failed as mentioned before.

Beside just a link to old version of the user guide, it will be helpful to provide a solution or suggestion.  Thanks.

Re: restore vvol VM from Express Protect

Hi anthonyc1,

You may try below steps to resolve the issue:

1. To avoid any changes during the restoration process, make sure the virtual machine (VM) is turned off.
2. Open the Nimble array administration interface and navigate to the vVol VM. Make sure to erase all of the vVol's previous pictures.
3. Make sure that no snapshots remain at any level of the hierarchy because snapshots can occasionally exist at different levels.
4. Open the array management interface for Nimble.
- Navigate to the relevant volume, or vVol.
- Check for any associated ACRs and remove them.
- On occasion, these ACRs can stop the restoration procedure from erasing the current data.
5. Verify that the vVol is not connected to or associated to any hosts at this time. If so, remove it.
6. Find the Express Protect copy you wish to restore by opening RMC-V.
- After selecting the copy, select the restore option.
- To return the copy to its original location, adhere to the instructions.
7. Ascertain that the RMC-V user account is authorized to conduct restore actions on the Nimble array.
8. Make that the RMC-V software and the Nimble array firmware are current. Restore failures can occasionally be caused by compatibility problems.
9. Look for more precise fault messages in the comprehensive error logs in RMC-V and Nimble if the restore fails once more.

Contact Nimble and RMC-V support for more in-depth help if the issue continues. Give them the logs and error messages so they can assist in identifying and resolving the problem.

Hope this helps.!

Regards,
Satish
