Can I manage an IBM Netfinity server with IM?

Can I manage an IBM Netfinity server with IM?

I am using an IBM Netfinity as my IM server managing the remainder of my servers which are all Compaq's. Daily I will receive a critical page from my IM server (my IBM) stating said server has had a critical event. After logging in and checking things out everything is ok. It also appears as Other and Unknown SNMP device in my device listing. What could be causing this?

Here is a good document that details how to add "third party" devices into the IM database so they can be recognized, and monitored.

Re: Can I manage an IBM Netfinity server with IM?

The latest version of IM7 i.e. SP2 has preloaded SNMP MIBS to manage both Dell and IBM. You simply have to register these IBM MIBS with the SNMP tools from IM7 and do a discovery of your IBM Netfinity servers.

One thing though, I don't quite get your statement that your IBM server is your IM7 machine??? This cannot work correctly as only Compaq/HP servers are supported.
IBM has it's own management platform = Director.

Re: Can I manage an IBM Netfinity server with IM?

The IM7 application is licensed for use only on ProLiant servers or other HP gear, although there is no technical reason that it will not operate. Its predecessor, IM XE, relied on the health driver for some work and that is only installable on a ProLiant. IM7 eliminated that dependency.

Yeah sure, but did you ever tried installing IM7 on anything else than a Compaq servers/desktop. I did (on a Dell machine to see what happened) and it ain't pretty :-)

Again, use the system/Software for what's intended and know you can manage 3rd party devices but only for basic operations.

Re: Can I manage an IBM Netfinity server with IM?

Thanks everyone for pointing me in the right direction. I am currently staging a ProLiant server to replace my IBM IM7 server :-)

I will be sure to register the IBM MIBS once IM7 SP2 has been reinstalled so I can manage my one lonely IBM server.

Re: Can I manage an IBM Netfinity server with IM?

I got my new server staged but for some odd reason, my new IM7 server (Proliant 1850R) does not recognise itself. It's status is listed as critical, with an unknown Device Type as well as no Device Address or Product Name.

I have the SNMP service community name specified and the trap destinations listed as

127.0.0.1

and the Security tab is populated with my SNMP community name with READ CREATE rights. What else am I missing?

Did you try and use the same database as your previous installation (if you are using a SQL database on a seperate server)? Is the SNMP Trap service also running on this server?

Re: Can I manage an IBM Netfinity server with IM?

Thanks Jeff for your response. I was able to figure out my problem.

Still can't figure out why my new IM server is listed as (Unknown HP SNMP Device). One would think the IM server knows it's a Compaq!?

Now I am trying to figure out why my two test HP printers are not displaying their product names.

Am I just really unlucky or were the old non web based versions of IM way better?

Re: Can I manage an IBM Netfinity server with IM?

I had this problem several times. I can have to do with DNS not configured correctly (multiple listings for your server).
Also make sure that you are viewing all devices in your query, not only servers.
For a correct functioning of IM7, your own IM7 server needs to be identified correctly!

Try to clear this problem but you'll probably need to reinstall IM7 all over. It solved my problem right away.
