Install CIM 7, connect to existing CIM database?

Hi. I have an existing CIM database on a SQL 2000 production server. This database was copied from our development lab. I would like to install CIM 7 SP2 console on a separate production server. Is there anyway to skip the SQL db creation process during the CIM install? I will not have dbo permissions to the production SQL server during the CIM install.

If that does not work, could I point the CIM installation to a test SQL server, and when the CIM installation is complete, could I change the ODBC config to point back to the production SQL server?

Thanks
David

If I remember correctly, if the database already exists it will ask you if you want to delete it and recreate the database or to keep the current one. I could be wrong though, it might just ask you if you want to delete it.

Your 2nd option is correct though, you can change SQL Server configuration in IM 7 after installing IM to use SQL in another location. You might have to do that.

Re: Install CIM 7, connect to existing CIM database?

Hi David, I've had to reinstall IM on quite a few occasions, and the best way to keep you database is to do a backup through the SQL Enterprise Manager prior to doing the install. When prompted to delete the current database, say yes and it will install a fresh one. Once your install is complete, stop the IM service, do a restore through SQL Enterprise Manager, then restart the IM Service. You should be golden.

I have had a few issues if I try to keep the existing database when running through the install.

In addition to the database, you also want to backup the CONFIG directory. For instance, if you want to use the same users that you added to IM7, then you will need files under the config directory that stores some encrypted info. Also, if you have rolled out "Trust by Certificates" to all your servers, you now have a new certificate with your new install. By stopping the service and copying back the config\certstore\ directory, you now use the same certificate.

As a "standard backup scheme", I would backup the db and the CONFIG directory.

thanks.
