Relatively high CPU on java.exe on CIM server

I just setup CIM 7 sp2.3 on a Proliant DL380. I have installed and configured SQL2000 on a separate server. The install went smooth and I am able to add new devices to my CIM. However, even when there aren't any tasks running, I am noticing the java.exe process on my CIM server is taking up consistently 30-40% CPU. I have no idea what it is doing. I am also noticing a lot of maintenance activity on traces my DBA was running on the CIM database ie: re-indexing of tables. This CIM database is on a separate server so I don't know if it is related. Any ideas?

Re: Relatively high CPU on java.exe on CIM server

I was told by my HP rep that java has a memory leak... if it gets much over 100mb in size in task manager, restart CIM or restart the server...
eventually for me discovery stops... so I just bounce the box.

See more info about database activity in the following thread:

With IM7 SP2.3 it should have installed the 1.3.1_09 JRE. There are no known memory leak issues, and besides, a memory leak doesn't manifest itself as CPU utilization.

You don't mention the configuration of your system or any of the sizing details (how many managed servers, how many users simultaneously in the application, frequency of polling, discovery, etc). It is very possible that 30-40% is what is to be expected.

Re: Relatively high CPU on java.exe on CIM server

As far as sizing, the database is extremely small, we just installed it the other day. DB size is 300mb where probably 50mb is populated. We installed this server b/c we were having so many other issues with our other CIM server. Our thinking was to configure a new CIM environment, distributing SQL and CIM on 2 separate servers and running them in parallel for awhile until we completely migrate to the new environment. We maunally added a handful of servers including one of our clusters. The server will need to support approx 400 servers after we migrate the other servers to it.

# of users in system - 2 max
Frequency of polling - default
Discovery - We have disabled auto discovery for the time being

Re: Relatively high CPU on java.exe on CIM server

David,
I read the article you send over on database activity. Good article. I forwarded it to my DBA and we are seeing this same strange activity (lots of re-indexing and dropping table) very frequently. Is there anyway to control or tune this?

Also how is this related to the java process on my CIM server? It is strange that with only 5 servers in my CIM database that my CIM server is running at a consistent 30-40% utilization. Are there any logs I could look at or a trace I can run to determine what java.exe is busy doing. The memory used by this process is fairly low - ~40mb.

Quick server spec for CIM
- Proliant 380 G2
- 1x1.4GHZ CPU
- 1.3GB RAM
- 2x36GB HDDs
