Unable to modify SNMP settings

Unable to modify SNMP settings

While trying to modify the SNMP settings on the Security Tab within Windows 2003 I've noticed that all the buttons are grey; hence I am unable to change the community string settings. I've logged in using the local admin, along with testing using a domain admin account and both yield the same results. I've uninstalled SNMP, rebooted and re-installed SNMP and the problem continues. I'm thinking this is a permissions issue, but am unable to find the problem when searching the registry. Anyone seen this problem or now how to resolve?

Re: Unable to modify SNMP settings

Solution found. A group policy had been deployed to this server and within GPO you can set the SNMP settings, but only to READ_ONLY, not READ_CREATE. Once the SNMP setting within the GPO were changed back to not configured and GPUPDATE was run on the server in question the problem was resolved.

Re: Unable to modify SNMP settings

Hello Brad,

I've seen your message here on the board and now I hope that you can help me a little bit...

I have a Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition system and since a few days I'm trying to get SNMP working. I tried what you have written (changing settings in group policy settings for SNMP)....so far so good.

But when I reboot the system then all settings are gone...nothing more is displayed on the security-tab (SNMP-Service/Properties).

Do you have a suggestion what could be wrong here ?

After a blank installation the settings in the group policy were "Not configured". I changed them to "Enabled" and entered the neccessary informations. After doing a "gpupdate" in a Command-Window and checking the SNMP-settings there was "my" community-string...but still all buttons were grey. When I now go back in the group policy and change the setting to "Not configured" then the buttons are enabled and all seems okay --- until the next reboot !

Maybe you have an idea that could help me and save me a lot of time... and sorry for my bad english !! I'm a german (trying to do my best...:-))

Thank you very much

Re: Unable to modify SNMP settings

Hubert--by any chance is this Windows 2003 server a member of a domain hosted on NT4?

Re: Unable to modify SNMP settings

Hello David,

yes, we have a NT4-Domain and this server is a member of this domain...

Is there (maybe) a problem with the domain-user account ???

Any help would be very nice !!!
Thank you...

Yes, we have seen this before in that situation.

Re: Unable to modify SNMP settings

...that sounds not good

Is there any workaround or what do I have to do ? CAN I do something to get SNMP working ALL the times (also after rebooting) ?

Thanks

Hubert
