Version control agent reports incorrectly

I installed the new version of 'HP Insight Diagnostics Online Edition for Windows', 7.0.0.1198, but the version control agent stills reports version 6.3.1.887 to be installed. If I open the 'HP Insight Diagnostics Online Edition for Windows' program then it is the new version so it is definetly installed. How can I fix this?

Re: Version control agent reports incorrectly

I have found some success. In add/remove programs both versions are present so I have tried removing both and reinstalling the new one. Version control seems happy as it now says it isn't installed. I now have a new problem as I have a windows service which hasn't been removed and will not start even though it is set to automatic. Seems too messy.

Re: Version control agent reports incorrectly

I ended up calling software support and they informed me that it is a flaw with their install and that it doesn't properly detect the older version so never uninstalls it. What you need to do is remove it from the ADD/Remove then reboot the machine prior to installing it again. If you are like me, then there will be the 2 version in the ADD/Remove so you will have to remove both and reboot.

What if rebooting isn't an option? Anyone know if there is an online fix for this?

Re: Version control agent reports incorrectly

Seems this will happen to anyone who upgrades to 7.20. The old version of Insight Diagnostics isn't removed. You'll have duplicate entries in Add/remove programs - and if uninstalling, a service that won't start (it's pointing to the Compaq directory of the old version, not the HP directory of the new version). Should be an easy fix for HP (wipe out the old and correctly register the new).

I too have this problem. I have logged an email call with HP, referencing this thread, asking when a fix will be made available.

No, and (now that you remind me) I haven't heard anything back from HP either. Time to email them with a reminder :-)

Re: Version control agent reports incorrectly

HP now have an advisory on this problem:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=PSD_EA050323_CW01

Workaround: uninstall previous version of Insight Diagnostics before updating to Support Pack 7.20

Re: Version control agent reports incorrectly

Thanks, from the advisory, the other workarounds are:

Under "Windows Services," Set the HP Insight Diagnostics Service to DISABLED. Because, by design, Insight Diagnostics Version 7.0.0.1198 does not run as a "Service," (but the previous version does), only the previous version will be disabled by using this setting.

OR

Remove the previous version of Insight Diagnostics using "Add/Remove Programs." Although both versions will be displayed with no version information, the previous version can be identified by its file size. The previous version will show a file size of 1.72 MB while the newly installed version has a file size of 2.76 MB.

Re: Version control agent reports incorrectly

If you are stuck with the HP Insight Service not being removed and don't want to leave it in a 'disabled' state then you can remove it with a small Windows resource kit utility called srvinstw.exe. It will remove/add any service you specify from a server without issue. You could also remove the service entry from the registry but the util is a lot easier to use.
